Open wastegate- Yay or Nay?
I was wondering what your thoughts were on this? Pros and cons?
Some of the different opinions I'm getting on this is that you gain a little more power with an open wastegate, than I was told its not that much of a deal for the loud ricey sound it makes. Than I get opinions that it makes a major difference. Basically I'm trying to decipher which direction to go with. What are your thoughts on this? My dilemma is do I run a dual open wastegates?
What are you guys running?
What do you recommend? opinions and thoughts welcomed..

Open wastegate on a 2jz has a great sound in my opinion. I just never saw the point of running an external gate and then recirculating it back into the exhaust. I haven't seen anything proven to say which gives better power either. I am going to run a single tial 44mm wastegate on my setup. No recirc for me.
You said dual wastegates. Are you running a twin scroll manifold or something?

In the 2JZ crowd, we coin it the term "screamer". In an otherwise semi-quiet car the dumped wastegate will scream when it dumps out. It's cool to have if you want that little edge of power and most of all if you want to scare someone. Trust me when I say, it is LOUD when that thing screams. I currently have mine dumped, but I will have it recirculated soon. The reason being that I want to hear the sweet sweet sound my BIG turbo spooling. Think of it this way, when I floor it down the street it will sound like a jet flew down the street and not a car. If you have a screamer then you won't be able to hear the turbo at full boost. In my opinion it's a very nice sound
Also, keep in mind...I have an electric cutout on my car. I can have my choice of having a quiet or absurdly loud car with the flick of a switch.

You guys both make good points but I have to kind of agree with Jeff. I rather hear the turbo spooling than having a screaming sound covering up all the sweet sounds that will come out.
In my case I say dual wastegates cuz its an HKS 2835 twin turbo kit. In a way I think dual open wastegates will sound sick but than I'm thinking that can get old real quick. Hearing twin HKS's will probably sound sweeter in the end. I was just wondering on if its a myth or fact on the power gain either way?
I know we have a lot of turbo guys, not just gs3 guys but gs4 guys too so I wanted to get your thoughts on this..

trust me recir the wastegate .. they are right , with the 2 jz its a screamer but it sounds real sweet but tends to be overbearing at times
your car is a testament to true show car and with the twins the new twins standing by it will have more plenty more kick a$$ power.. your car is way to special and classy to make that noise
recir and enjoy the beauty and sweetness of the twins crying out for more milk
and furthermore i have open dump a tial 44mm and when i am in it , its loud and drws too much attention sometimes
i will be getting mine recir shortly for next to the twins nothing sounds sweeter then the quick spooling of a dbb turbo

lexforlife(sorry I don't remember your first name...seems like all the old timers here go by a first name basis lol), I got tired of the screamer a while back. I was just too lazy to get it plumbed in. I'm going to plumb it in when I make my new 4" downpipe eventually. There is one solution to the screamer, prevent the wastegate from opening as much...turn up the boost. I'm not even sure if I have to recirc my new setup because I'm going to be running 30psi

Doesn't the HKS kit plumb the wastegates back into the exhaust already? I say nay to open wastegate. It won't really affect power too much as long as you have a smooth transition. Mine looks like it does so I have a smooth transition into the exhaust. I could have went straight from the WG into the DP, but when you go straight I can cause cavitation affecting boost control and spool.

Oh yeah, nothing sounds better than the spool of a large turbo (or 2 medium size ones).

Sooo much better than a screaming wastegate.

i would say get a screamer pipe...if you were driving a supra or an RX7.
on a GS i would keep it low key. that sound doesnt belong on a car like that. lol. but turbo spool does.
im going to be running open dump on my SC but the only reason is i go for function over form and in most cases im less normal then most people. lol. that is why i choose open dump and 18x10.5+15 wheels all around

IMO if I had a turbo on a gs I would keep it recirculated. It allows you to hear the turbos spool and also whatever else is going on in your motor. Ive driven in dsm's and my buddies mr2 with an external dump and yea its hella loud and scares people, but thats pretty much all you hear when your hitting boost. It all depends on what car its on I guess, but on the gs I would prefer the smooth and sweet turbo spooling noises.
I appreciate the feedback guys. Yes the kit has the plumbing made to recirculate I was just wondering since I was getting different opinions from diffferent turbo guys here and there. I going to go with my original plan which is to just make the kit work and plum the way HKS designed it.
I was just wondering cause a my buddy Mario was telling that it makes a big difference in power and I wasn't sure if it really did or not.

Depending on how much boost your running you will see about a 15-30hp difference between running a recirculated and atmosphere dump.
Also...Smaller turbos under normal driving are louder than big turbo's if your going for the "whistle" spool sound. My 67 is much louder than my 72 on my Supra was.
