Default lightweight car battery..?

any of you guys thought to put in a lightweight battery to shed some weight?

I saw in a BMW forum the guys were talking about volt phreaks and some 6.5lb car battery they have and how they save like 40lbs vs their stock battery..

any idea what the ISx50 oem battery weighs?

He's not refering to the Optima batteries. Optima makes excellent batteries, but they are not lightweight. Below is the link to VoltPhreaks.

It doesn't sound like a long term solution. You can only use those for temporary usage I think. I may be wrong though.

well the super light volt phreaks one is not good to have for someone that doesnt drive their car every to everyother day bc it will die, onless you get this extra thing that keeps charging it... but i was just curious to if anyone knew of any other light weight batteries. if you can shave 20-30 lbs i want one if it isnt too pricey

I am running a Odyssey PC680 battery in my other car (Galant VR-4) and it is a nice small light weight battery. Was amazed how I was still able to start the car in 10 degree weather. Only thing with small battery setup is that if your car isn't a daily it might not be for you since the battery needs to be used in order for it not to discharge too much. Also a no no if your running alot of electronics.

I used an Odyssey / Hawker battery in my S2000 for years, and it was awesome. I think it was only $100, and only weighed like 14 lbs. It actually started the car better than the OEM battery. The only real downside to the small dry cell batteries is that they suck for the big audio apps. I rarely even turn my stereo on...

That depends on which model you chose. I think I started a thread about this very topic last year that probably wouldn't be hard to find. I wound up buying an Optima Yellow instead since our car is so friggin' heavy.

The ISx50 losing 35 lbs from a lighter battery (about what you can expect) is about a 1% weight loss. Not much. It's also behind the front axle so it's not even that poorly positioned from a weight distribution perspective, but it is unfortunately very high in the car relative to the center of gravity.

That's still about like adding 2-3 RWHP.

I had that odyssey in my old Z28, it worked really good but if you ever leave the car in storage for more than a month it will most likely completely discharge and not hold a charge so buy a trickle charger. Other than that I never had any problems. It started a 5.7L V8 with little effort.
