Post Yes another muffler thread! X Y H or || pipe

I will be doing my muffler soon. I have the GS400. I can split the mufflers by adding a X, Y, or H pipe. I was thinking of just doing straight (||)pipes right to the stock mufflers. I know, I know! some of you will say "just get aftermarked mufflers...." I am thinking of keeping the stock look with just a louder sound.

I would like to hear from those who have done similar setup. what would be the best way to go? I am taking suggestions

From what I have read the "X" pipe will decrease low-end acceleration. The car will feel slower off the line but pick up in the mid and high-end.

Always wondered if we could go the straight piping route with the Tanabe Medallion Touring Cat-back system? what would be the pros and cons of that setup? Would X-pipe work better with this setup?

Like tru play posted.. I have always wondered why most CL members feel there is a need to meet both exhaust pipes at one point. I feel the limits the flow.
Originally I wanted to remove were the muffler pipes meet and take them straight to magnaflow mufflers. I think that is the less restrictive setting. Better thank x y or H pipe. The only thing that worries me is will it be too loud? Not that I mind. I guess that is why I will probably just do the straight pipes to the original mufflers. If it sounds good Ill keep, but if it does not make too much of a difference I will probably go magnaflow mufflers.

I have been searching for sound clips of straight pipe with muffler setup for the gs400's I don’t seem to find. The links I find are no longer there.

If you run separate dual pipes you will loose torque and make your engine sound more like a mustang.

If you want to gain power and or achieve a specific sound you should search and read as much as you can as there are many that have posted results.

The reason the factory Y pipe works so well is that it works like a one way valve letting exhaust flow away from the engine without providing much restriction. If you take off everything except the Y pipe and do a pressure test you will find minimal backpressure at full throttle at redline. At less than redline you will be hard pressed to find any backpressure.

You have a heavy car with a small 4 liter engine. Low speed torque is important to how much fun the car is to drive. Things like a torque converter upgrade, 3.76 gears and headers will all make the car FEEL so much better. Exhaust changes will change the sound and frequently to a less desireable sound.

So, what do you really want?

Gas excavation is your friend

There is a reason why headers/exhaust manifolds are built the way they are. Imagine having 8 individual exhaust piping for your car. You can bet the car will drive like **** around the city. You will not limit the flow as long as the collector is well design so it doesn't become a bottleneck.

I guess Ill stay with the Original y setup and go for some nice magnaflows.
Thank you . That would also be the more afordable way to go.

Curious about this post, only because you've introduced a muffler I didn't know they made for our cars. Does Magnaflow have a GS set-up? According to most threads/posts/polls, the most used exahust is Borla (which I'm buying this month).

Feedback?

I'm pretty sure you can achieve similar specs and look with Magnaflow components and by increasing your piping diameter. I plan to do Magnaflow or Borla, axle back.
