The ONLY performance benefit a K&N drop in has is at 5000 RPM and above.

1. No sound difference
2. Yes. Better throttle response and improved gas mileage ( approx 1 mpg - IS250)
3. ajusa.com sells them cheap.

I haven't checked this thread for a while so sorry for the delay in responding.

Your conclusion is based on a totally different situation. For starters, you're basing your argument on the exhaust side, not the intake. In addition, you're basing your argument on the existence or absence of major sound absorbing/deadening components. I thought were were discussing the difference in sound with the mere substitution of an aftermarket filter.

With that in mind, an intake with a less restrictive filter will be quieter than the same intake with a more restrictive filter.

i think the "aggressive" sound some people were talkin about comes from puting a K&N cold air intake in. not just a drop in filter...its been proven than a CAI boosts power. but to get the best out of it you should do an aftermarket header and exhaust. then you would FEEL the power increase. So my vote would be YES for a K&N CAI but NO for just a drop in filter.

heres a link for the CAI...

i have an sc300 and i put a k&n cone filter instead of the drop in. the car seems a little more responsive and under normal driving i get 20 miles per gallon instead of 18 when it was stock

I don't really care about power, but if it does give even 1 mpg increase, it will be worth it over time.... even a little bit better gas mileage is why I would buy it... That is the proof I am lookin' for.

This could very easily be attributed to ingesting warmer air. At anything less than 50% throttle warm air gets better efficiency. Only at WOT does the cold air thing make a big difference.
