Unlike many of you, my knowledge of car mechanics is minimal at best. When I look under the hood its like chinese arithmatic. I've had my Green GS 400 for 4 years now and I love it. The only problem I've had has been a dying starter that had to be replaced for $500.00 6-mos ago. I thought about selling my car but there is not much out there that I can get for under $50K so I guess I'm in it for the long haul. Everything is factory and I just picked out some 18" Chrome wheels. Sorry for the monologue but I wanted to give some insight since this is my first post. Now on to my question, speed.
I would like to increase the speed of my car, where should I start? I've seen those $50-$100 modules on ebay guarnteing 45+HP. I know you can spend thosands I just want to start out slow. What will give me the most bang for the buck? Performance chips, modules, air intake, etc? I just need to know where to start.
Also, I live in Atlanta, reccomend any shops to do the work?
Welcome to CL. I think most people on the site will tell you the only way to make the GS faster is to go FI(Turbo or Supercharger). Other than that, it seems as though most everyone will tell you to go with a Torque Converter to make your car quicker off the line and more responsive through the pedal. I don't have one but it will be my next Mod. You will get lots of recommendations here so good luck and let the Mods begin .
I have the SRT with ECU, and it was a noticable difference. You need to like that V8 roar, because at WOT you WILL hear it. Pretty easy to do, relatively inexpensive.
After futhur research it appears that the SRT intake with ECU is a must @ ~$450.00. The other item is a Torque Converter. I've checked with SRT and they run $950.00. RMM has a deal RMM Torque Converter- w/ 3.76 RMM LSD $1149.00. Any thoughts?
I started with the SRT intake and ECU, I personally dont think it gave me much in terms of real performance. The chips you see on ebay are junk, there is no chip that I am aware of that works for the GS400. The only real option is supercharger or turbo charger, either case your looking at around 10K when it is all said and done.
to start out slow I would do the torque converter and 3.76 gears, this will give you a real kick in the pants when you hit the accelerator and wont kill your checking account.

CDubb - be careful with this. The RMM TC with 3.76 RMM LSD means that you get the TC that is compatible with the 3.76 RMM LSD - you don't get both. So if you don't have the 3.76 RMM LSD then you don't want this one.
SRT doesn't have a torque converter, that's from Precision Industries.
Of the intake, upgraded torque converter, and the 3.76LSD, I'd take the torque converter for bang for the buck. The intake sounds great but doesn't add much in my opinion. The 2800rpm stall Precision Industries 'Dragon' torque converter you will notice immediately. If you get that you should also get a transmission fluid cooler installed.
You would also notice the 3.76LSD instantly as well but that's almost twice as expensive.
The TC and 3.76LSD together are awesome (I have both) but now you're talking some serious coin ($2K for parts plus maybe $1K for install). As for supercharger or turbo - they're both pretty complex (turbo more so) and hugely expensive but will certainly make your car a LOT faster.
My car's for sale in the classifieds by the way with all these mods if you're interested in a fast one already done!
