Default WTF W58 short gears

Finished the auto to W58 swap and now I cant hit 60mph till the end of 3rd gear. Is something wrong here. Torque is on overload, which is fun and all but the short gears is not gonna work for me. Help!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Moved to the Performance and Maintenance subsection)

Congratulations on the swap, OP! Your 4.27 diff makes the gearing very short. Needing to change gears twice before 60mph is spot on and this is exactly how 1993-1996 Supra MKIV NA 5-speeds are geared from the factory. I've daily driven the same ratio in my car for the last for the last four years. Personally I enjoy it and think it's a great match for NA engines. Not for turbo.

The 3.916 (3.92) ratio from the SC400 (or the TT Auto's 3.769) will significantly lower your revs and remove the close ratio feel, however your acceleration and response will be noticeably diminished until you go with a turbo setup. Alternatively you could also locate a 92-97 5-speed 4.08 differential or the same ratio from the GS300 which had a 4.08 for one or two model years if you are staying NA.

If you are going turbo in the future I would go with the sc400 or tt auto ratio. I have the stock 4.08 and it still feels short with a turbo. N/A though it was a really good ratio I can;t even imagine the 4.27 I would shifting all the time.

sorry to jack the thread, but would the 3.2 gearing from the SC430 work well for the 1uz with a w58? what about the CD009 (350z 6spd)

^^ Absolutely. I have a TT Auto ratio waiting for when my swap is ready, however almost five years ago I knew I wouldn't have that swap together yet so I reasoned the 4.27 was worth it to me over the long haul. For a much shorter build timeframe I completely agree with Ali.

Ali, the 4.27 ratio is actually easier to drive with than you'd think. It is very aggressive but it's easy to get used to. Driving in a docile manner in all situations is just as easy as driving in an aggressive manner. You do shift a bit more but personally I enjoy it with the short shifter I have

The factory 4.08 while NA felt very mismatched. More docile overall and on mountain roads 2nd was too aggressive while 3rd wasn't aggressive enough.

...All pointless though once you go turbo But for an NA setup it's a lot of fun.

Totally agree. It's better to get a turbo friendly ratio within that timeframe.

The 98-00 SC400 and 2001+ SC430 3.26:1 gearing will work on a 1UZ with a W58 but it will not be overly responsive. Not sure about how the CD009 ratios stack up. 3.26 is generally considered best for turbo cars or V160 swaps (even if they are against a built 1UZ-FE).

i think the CD009 ratios are very similar to the v160, so would the 3.26 work well in that case? but for w58 keep the stock 400 ratio?

Offhand I don't know the CD009 ratios and I don't have experience with those transmissions, sorry. If it is as you say then your logic makes sense to me but I am going to have to defer to some of the others more learned on the subject of the 3.26 + CD009 combination.

Now with a W58 (or R154) swap, yes I think keeping the 3.92 is more ideal.

Edit: oldManTan, it appears you are correct: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/per...dapter-30.html

the sc430 3.26 is perfect for most 6 speed transmissions (not the t56). the CD009 and even the bmw 6 speed have very close ratios to the v160, the CD009 is pretty much the same ratios unless you are being very picky. all these transmissions have 5th as the 1:1 gear and a 6th overdrive meaning they are "close ratio" transmissions, so you need a lower ratio diff to make it normal.

The t56 has a 5th and 6th both as overdrive on the other hand and is not a close ratio transmission so it would work fine with the higher ratio diffs but not many swap this in without the LSX motor attached.

ratio wise a 1uz with a w58 is going to need similar as a 2jz turbo with a w58, you will just have a little more grunt down low vs top end hp.
I would still go with a 3.76 if getting lsd or if you have a 92-96 sc400 just keep the 3.9 thats already in there, it will seem just right actually cause its slightly better than the 4.08 that the manual sc300 comes with so it will match the v8 better.

92-97 SC300
6 cyl, AT (4.27 ratio)
6 cyl, MT (4.08 ratio)

98-00 SC300
6 cyl, AT (4.27 ratio)

92-96 SC400
8 cyl (3.92 ratio)

97-00 SC400
8 cyl (3.266 ratio)

92-96 MKIV Supra

w/o turbo; (4.27 ratio) Limited Slip
w/o turbo; (4.27 ratio)
w/turbo, MT (3.133 ratio) Limited Slip
w/turbo, AT (3.769 ratio) Limited Slip

97-98 MKIV Supra
w/o turbo; (4.08 ratio) Limited Slip
w/o turbo; (4.08 ratio)
w/turbo, MT (3.133 ratio) Limited Slip
w/turbo, AT (3.769 ratio)
w/turbo, AT (3.769 ratio) Limited Slip
