click, click, starter fix 3hrs, $27 not $271
On friday my starter was messing up just a click when i went to start it. After a few tries then it would turn over and run like the 213,xxx champ it is. Anyhoo searched found an old thread about the issue and a few hours, a 12mm, 14mm socket, bunch of extensions, rachet, thumb wheel thing and a uni wiggle later starter is out. there is a nice tight area to pull it out next to the trans. Opened it up with a 7mm, undid bolts pulled the contacts out picked up new ones from toyota dealer 26 and some change later, put everything back in and voila my car is back to new, er OLD. some pics. This is the reason i now like denso starters.

Keep us updated on how long the fix last. I own a rebuilding shop and dont do that small parts replacement only, because you dont know the condition of all the other parts in the unit.

no problem i hope it lasts a while. Well i heard the OEM starters are good forever with the exception of the contacts. The parts guy saw me walk in with em and immediately reached down pulled two out, handed em over, I guess this happens alot for the parts to be up front. The plunger didn't look too well but i cleaned everything up a bit. I don't have any more pictures taken cause the wife got bored.
O.L.T> Yeah i couldn't imagine dealing with that PITA on the SC4.

i was planning on it then i decided what the hell started taking **** apart and it ended up not being too much of a pain. A new starter costs damn near what i paid for the car.

Either way you're gonna have to remove the old starter. Its a two-minute job after that! I did the same thing and spent around $20. Was quoted $65 for a used one, but the chances of that not working within the next few months are almost guaranteed.

Update on the starter fix.
Started like a champ everyday, to work and back and random errands. I am doing a swap now to the 1JZGTE motor. So I put a solid 9 months of cranking on the replaced contacts and not a single issue with this fix. Just figured I would update, not with failure, but change of avenue with the whole car. I need to update the links too, for future people wanting to do this.
