Default Mysterious 1jz Black Can/Box Identification

What is the function of the black canister/box located in front of where the main harness comes through the fire wall?

evap canister. stores all the vapors from the fuel tank then sends them to the intake where they get burned off.

Is it removeable or should I leave it alone. I'd love to mount my catch can in that location.

It's removable, I believe I took mine out in favor of weight reduction.

I took the hoses off and could hear and smell gas vapors comeing from one of the hoses. What happens when I remove and just cap it, won't they build up?

vapors will build up in the gas tank. this is normal though even with the system hooked up properly. this is dependent on ambient temp and how much gas is in the tank ect.... will your gas tank explode? probably not.

I wouldn't recommend capping them off. I took mine out and capped off the line on the throttle body that it ended up going back to, but as far as the main line into it, you should let it vent out into the fender well.
