Unhappy HELP: loud wheezing sound under the hood!!!

It started as a subtle wheezing whenever I turned the steering wheel while the car was on but not moving (ie: parking, parallel parking) so I figured it to be a power steering problem, but within two days' time the wheezing is now considerably louder and now it's on constantly, changing pitch with my acceleration and steering. Sounds kind of like a sh!!ty old minivan pulling out of a parking space. What do you guys think?? An alternator about to crap out??? I'm afraid to drive her until I've figured out what exactly I need to do to fix her .

are you sure you're not low on power steering fluid? (and I'm sure you're well versed about the PS leak )

Power steering fluid is there, but is it supposed to be black like motor oil? The sound seems to be coming from the power steering area of the block, but I'm not sure I could find a leak...

Well the reservoir is like a soda can and you really can't see in, but when I pull off the cap, there's black fluid on it

Same for me. The fluid was low so I added some more, turned the wheel from lock to lock to get out the air bubbles and it stopped.

Haha the fluid should not be black...at all. It should look like ATF (because it is ATF ), aka a bright red color. I made a great post on how to flush your power steering fluid a while back, you should be able to find it. Id recommend doing that and seeing if it helps the problem.

Here she is

Find an unsuspecting friend and have them help you out this weekend. ANd I would recommend doing this ASAP before your problem gets any worse.

Damn.. someone hasn't changed the PS fluid in a while...

*mental not: get mine done soon lol

I used to get that whirring noise too, it was down to the power steering fluid (or lack thereof), the pump was running dry

Hey thanks for the tip aerostar.

You guys with the low fluid, did you find any leaks in your power steering system? How is your original psp holding up now? In other words, is this a precursor to a bigger problem?

My PS pump is fine. I have a very slow leak where the rubber hose connects to the bottom of the reservoir. I need to replace the hose and clamp.

im missing a small chunk from my rubber hose. the actual leak is just a small crack but the missing rubber part of the hose doesnt help. i need to replace the hose too but lexus charges a ridiculous amount. I tried a supra hose but it comes up short barely. you might be able to get it on but i decided against it.
