Automatic Braking
Okay, this has happened a few times, now. Our ES did the same thing and I think Lexus needs to fix this. Before you call me a bad driver, let me explain. Say I'm backing up out of a parking spot, slowly. Looking back as well as monitoring the camera. I can see a clear path but I can also see getting closer to the car behind me. I can hear the beeps getting closer together, then one solid beep, and then all of a sudden the car brakes with a solid CRUNCH! OMG, I just hit something! No I didn't, the car, when it automatically brakes, makes it sound like you hit something. Why can't the car just simply brake? Why does it have to make a crashing sound. My Wife nearly had a heart attack the first time it happened to her. She actually thought she hit something. She got out of the car and looked behind her and she just said "what the he!!?"
Has anybody else had this happen? Again, it was the same way on our ES, as well.

Normal. My ES did this too. Backing out of starbucks with my coffee, i am paying attention, i know where cars are, i have full control -- i see a car to my side a mile away -- and then suddenly slam/jerk/screech. I want to say to my lexus (at the time).. hey car... i see that other car and it's going slow and i have more than enough time/room to continue backing out. but the car assumes the other car is going 100mph.
situation #2... following a line of cars in succession making a u-turn.. and if i'm close enough to the car in back of me, FULL ABS STOP despite the car in front of me traveling the same speed. causing all the cars behind me to get mad. something about the car in front of me revealing its side somehow throws the car off.
the system is way too sensitive and is not very smart at perception of actual danger and in fact can create actual danger when it messes up.
what cars need are several cameras performing intelligent real-time analysis and calculations and are context and scenario dependent.

Been there, done that. Still have the brown stained pants as proof
But after my initial "Welcome to Lexus automatic reverse braking" moments (first time when I was simply backing into my garage at my normal "I know what I'm doing briskness", and the second when my wife decided to walk behind the car when I was reversing), I have simply changed my backing up habits. If I take it a bit easier backing up, and especially if I can have my foot lightly on brake pedal, I haven't had to change my pants in quite a few months now (at least for this reason).
