Noises when intuitive parking assist with automatic braking kicks in

One of the features my car came with is intuitive parking assist with automatic braking. Earlier this afternoon I was parking my car, trying to test out the sonars. I heard all the beeping and the “Brake!” message popped up, but I kept going wanting to see what happens (I was moving less than 1 mph, the speedometer didn’t go above 0). And then I heard a sound like I had actually hit the object in front of me, and felt the car vibrate. I’d describe it as rough thuds. Of course, I hadn’t actually hit anything, the automatic braking function kicked in and stopped the car.
My question is: is that the normal sound when the automatic braking from parking assist kicks in? Has anyone else experienced this? I was expecting the car to just apply the brakes by pressing the brake pedal harder, which doesn’t normally make any noise out of the ordinary. Anyone know exactly what systems are activating to handle this braking function?
Thanks in advance!
