Lexus Dashcam
Hello,
Noticed the 2024 NX 350 has an option to add a dashcam for $375 USD. I have a 2022 NX Luxury and was curious if this would be a dealer add-on option for a 2022 model?
Thanks

It likely is, but I would recommend a FitCamX. It is much stealthier and is unnoticeable. Much better price as well. The Lexus one sticks to the windshield and is very noticeable. I don't think it is available with a rear camera, if you want to add that feature. I have just the front one which is good enough for my purpose.

I had looked at the FitCamx, but did not want anything in my line of sight bulging below the mirror (6'1"), something that might look like a mod to Lexus for any warranty electrical issues, wanted GPS, and wanted a integrated rear camera also. I had used the Viofo brand for several years and went with the A229 Duo. I put it on the passenger side of the mirror-totally hidden to the driver line of sight. The rear camera is integrated and powered with the front by a very thin coxial cable. Surprising easily to install and hide the wires. Phone connects by Wifi 5GHz for configuration and fast downloads and it looks from the outside just like part of the vehicle windows sensors of new cars.
If you want a 4k the A139 Pro 2ch version, they just started shipping with the latest Sony 4k sensor that has better HDR and low sensitivity over existing sensors than the A229 that I have currently. Most higher-end daskcams use some version of Sony sensors.
A recommendatio hint for rear camera: On the rear camera having a very thin cable with small connectors make the installation much easier to go from the car body to the hatch window. Look at the rear camera for installation flexibly and adjustment of angle. Some are pretty rigid in position options. Also, when installing the rear camera on the NX the rear digital camera mirror option already has bump/protrusion into the listed view area of the hatch, so I placed beside the bump (to not make the camera intrude in back view even more. And I positioned the rear camera in the area that the wiper cleans for dirt. You could place it a litter higher to the top edge, but the wiper does not clean that area. Finally, most rear cameras are only 1080P and perform relatively poor because of the dark wintdown tint. One reason I got the A229 Duro was that it had 2K in the rear also. But realisticly, most rear cameras will not pick up license plates at night very well due to the reduced light.

I had actually purchased the setup with the rear camera before I got the car. It is hard wired to the front and comes with a long cable that requires burying inside the trim.. I decided not to install it as I couldn't find a decent location on teh rear of the car. I have the digital interior rear view mirror. The FitCamX rear camera would be a good distance down the back window. and more obtrusive to me than useful.
They were nice enough to take it back and refund me the money. The difference up front is a short wire and connector which easily is hidden up inside the housing.

Oh, I mentioned I wanted a dashcam with GPS, which the FitCamx does not have. If you do use GPS turned-on, any footage you show will also show if you were speeding. So if you drive fast a lot, you might want to think twice. LOL And even without GPS, a smart lawyer can you the framing rate/location and calculate the approx speed of your car from the footage. So if you use it as evidence and you were speeding, you may not have as clear of a case for fault as one might think.

You don't want your dashcam to be the reason you get screwed. Without a dashcam, the burden is on them to prove their case against you.
That said, I have a dual channel dashcam.😜
In fact, I do knows few lawyers who actually recommend against having a dashcam. The po-po can easily review your footage, and even if one of your historical videos shows you speeding, there's a while can of worms they can open with that.

you can have a unit that you put in place and remove quickly. If you’re not at fault, then break it out
If you want to see more about the FitCamX, I have reviewed it:

And, one reason I don't want a built-in dash cam- just don't know where that data is being stored and who can access it- legally or not. Actually, IMO, one should not state they have a recording immediately. It may or may not be to your advantage, if it exposes some weakness in your defense. And also, it good for them to "perjury themselves" with their false statements and, when timely, revealed the videos of what actually happened. And one reason to have both front and rear to get a better perspective of the total situation. The bottom line: I have dual dashcams in all my cars and it has successfully defended against a false claim that could have been "more he said, you say" situation. The daskcam camera cost was nothing compared to its value in evidence.
