iphone messaging not working as it did before

**RESOLVED**iphone messaging not working as it did before
iphone6s, ios11--when press offhook button on NX, the Mobile Assistant screen comes up, but microphone is grayed out. Need to click cancel.
Completed basics, reboot phone, remove all bt from all devices and started over. No change. Inspected all settings, but nothing evident to me.
Don't use often, so not sure if related to ios11, but thought I did test everything after that install.
When I use verbal Hey Seri with iphone nearby, the Mobile Assistant appears with microphone lighted up and all good from there.
What changed?
Only test so far, friend's iphone6 on ios11 works normal on new RX350.
Guess I should pair my 6s to the RX, and see if problem follows phone to different car.
