1999 GS400. I don't want to spend a lot of money replacing the transponder or the receiver if it's an easy fix.

Its hard to diagnose your issue without seeing the car in person. I believe your issue resides in the transponder. If you have another set of keys use that transponder to test out your system. Normally people use one transponder for a number of months/years while the secondary unit stays at home. I would say your battery is not working however you indicated that you have changed it.

Also you have to look at where you park your car; There may be radio interference causing your transponder signal not too reach the vehicle.

Hope this helps in any way.

Tach thanks for the response.

I believe it may be the transponder. I've dropped it from a 3 story balcony once We don't have another secondary master key. Just a wallet/valet key. I've taken the car to the middle of nowhere, and it still does the same thing. I'll check the fuses this week if I can find some time, and I'll let you know

3 story balcony! lol these keys don't have shock resistors in them so that may be one of the causes. Keep me posted.

Default GS300 problems

Tach, If I described a set of symptoms on a 1999 Lexus GS300 would you be able to give me some ideas of where to start with repairs?

I'm asking first since in the first post it said "NELOC" owners and I'm not sure what that is.

quick question, my a/c stopped working about a year ago. The compressor wasnt kicking on, does that have anything to do with the sensor on the bumper? cus i removed it not knowing what it was for. also my outside temperature display does not work. thanks in advance

David, That sensor in front of your bumper is your outside temp sensor. your ac compressor clutch most likely seized and/or you probably have no freon in the system. I would tap (lightly) the compressor with a hammer ( front of the compressor ) try and knock it a few times to see if it catches on. There is a magnetic clutch that engages the a/c system when you turn it on; sometimes due to rust and not being used for a long time can cause it to malfunction.

Hey thanks a lot. 1999 Lexus GS 300, we are the second owners and now have around 205K on it. Love this car and plan to drive it a long time yet. It had/has 1/4 tank of gas in it.

Wife was leaving for work couple nights ago and it stalled a block from our house; she got it started and went another couple 100 feet and it stalled again. She was able to get pulled to side of road and then it would start but idle down and die after several seconds.

I had a buddy help me tow it home and I messed with it what little I could that night; after trying to start it several times noted lights (interior and dash) to be fading and acting erratically. It also started to click and not even turn over. I hooked my jumper box to the battery and the car started and ran fine for about 30 seconds ( I had pushed it into the garage so didn't want to run it long) before I shut it off. I was convinced it was a battery/electrical issue so went and purchased a new battery and installed it only to find the car acting just like it did before. (the stalling problem-lights blinking and clicking appears to be fixed with the new battery.)

So as it currently sits it will start, run for about 2 seconds and idle down to almost nothing with rough running before quickly stalling.

I have a new baby almost here (wife not working now) so with money tight and being moderately mechanically inclined I want to try and fix it myself.

Thanks in advance for your help!

This problem can have many factors. Here is what I can tell you to check. Remove some of your fuel from the tank ( disconnect your fuel line and drain some fuel ) You may have some water in your fuel tank causing the car too stall out. You might also have a failing fuel pump causing it to short out and turn off. Check your IAC ( Idle air control motor ). Check your throttle body for carbon build up and check your spark plugs and wire to make sure they are not worn out. Let me know what you find. Also see if you have a check engine light and any codes.

Thanks for that list of things to start with, after you replied I went ahead and started by trying to rule out the fuel pump as the culprit.

I pulled up the rear seat cushion and accessed the fuel pump. I took off the little yellow clip and disconnected the fuel line. I think I can access a fuel pressure gauge tomorrow, do you know if standard fuel pressure gauges will hook in to the top of the fuel pump and the disconnected fuel line in order to check fuel pressures? This is the only way I know to rule out fuel pump (short of buying a new one) but I've never used one of these gauges before.

FWIW, I don't have a code reader or whatever those are called.

You can get a fuel pressure gauge and remove the fuel pressure regulator and connect it to that and see if you are getting any fuel into the motor.

Where do you find the "fuel pressure regulator" and connect the gauge. Looked and looked for a hook up with no luck.

The regulator is on the fuel rail line, you remove the regulator with a 22mm open ended wrench and screw in the gauge. Start the car and check how much pressure is running through the engine.
