I have a 2000 RX300 with 56K miles. A couple of weeks ago, the check engine light came on. Before taking it to the dealer, I went to AutoZone and their diagnostics said it was a couple of sensors in the evaporative control system. I don't remember the code numbers for sure, but I think they were 440 and 446. Anyway, I took it to the dealer and they checked it and said that my gas cap was just loose and they reset the warning and off I went. Today, driving to work I notice that the light has come on again. Any ideas from mechanics out there? Thanks in advance for your input.
I suspect that the charcoal canister in the evaporative control system is becoming defective in your RX. I had the check engine light and TRAC OFF warnings in my '01 ES a couple months ago. The dealership ran through the error code and told me that my charcoal canister needs to be replaced. After the replacement, I haven't had any warning signs since then. It will probably cost $500-$600 for parts and labor. Check with your Lexus warranty and see if it will cover the work.
P0440 is recorded by the ECM when evaporative emissions leak from the components within the dotted line in fig.1 below (line goes between the vapor pressure sensor and the VSV for Vapor Pressure Sensor.
DTC Detecting Condition: The fuel tank pressure is atmospheric pressure after the vehicle is driven for 20 min. (2 trip detection logic)
Trouble Area:
-Vapor Pressure Sensor
-Fuel tank cap incorrectly installed
-Fuel tank cap cracked or damaged
-Vacuum hose cracked, holed, blocked, damaged or disconnected
-Hose or tube cracked, holed, damaged or loose seal
-Fuel tank cracked, holed or damaged
-Charcoal canister cracked, holed or damaged
Thanks Lex. When I took it to the dealership a couple of weeks ago they said that the fuel cap was not sealing properly and they replaced it. Apparently it something not quite as simple.
I have been busy and finally got around to getting the car into the dealership this morning. Diagnosis...a vacuum hose on the filter was disconnected. Had my oil and filters changed at a Jiffy Lube a few weeks ago and the did not re-connect a vacuum line which caused a vacuum leak, warning lights, etc.
bring your Jiffy Lube bill and Lexus repair bill back to Jiffy Lube and ask them to reimburse your for the Lexus bill since they supposedly caused the vacuum hose displacement.
