Just a generic check engine light warning. Have you had the computer scanned for what code is stored? What was the code last time?

Last time just check engine light came on, and thought it might be a gas cap issue (first time that's ever happened to me!). Light cleared over time. I've been good about making sure gas cap is on tight, and given the different warning, thought it might be something else.

My Lexus experience has made me not worry about a check engine light. Had one after I drained my battery and had to jumpstart it but it went away by itself after an hour of driving.

Now a check engine light on a BMW is a different story

Getting a CEL and not knowing the code is like having a pain in your body and not getting it diagnosed. The OBD port is there for a reason as are the devices that plug into them. Seeing a CEL and not getting it diagnosed or not diagnosing it yourself with an OBD reader is folly IMHO.

Not worried one bit when it clears up immediately by itself and car is running fine.

An actual fault won't clear up by itself and will stick around.
