I have a 95 ES300 with 154,000 miles on it and was wondering what an appropriate ballpark figure for a tune-up would be. My local garage quoted me about $300 for parts and labor. I'm wondering how much more expensive it would be to take the car to Lexus and if it is worth the price difference.

Don't know the going rates for ES tune-ups, best bet would be to call around your local Lexus AND Toyota dealers. If you decide to go with your local garage, make sure their quoted price is for OEM parts and you might want to "hang around" their service bay while they do it just to keep them honest. Many places do not replace the rear 3 sparkplugs b/c of the labor/costs involved.

Purchase OEM parts at a discount (saving about 20%) and having a reputable mechanic install them for the price of labor.

 

What "Nick-T" said is true.... In order to get to the back plugs the intake plenum has to come off. I just did this over the weekend. Took me 2hrs to tear down, and another hour or so to put back together. I'm guessing that the flat rate is somewhere around 2.5 hrs. And a "real tune up" would also include adjusting the valves, so add an hour or so there. New plugs, gaskets, and other parts.... and I'd say the job would be in the $600 (Toyota) to $1,200 (Lexus) range, but that's just a guess. The "Lexus" price might be higher...

Lexus does not make a V6 in which its neccessary to remove the intake plenum to change the three spark plugs against the firewall.,with the proper tools and knowledge it takes about 10 minutes////

 

Hope I can download what you know to my head I guess that's why there are techs and shade tree mechanics like me.

 

Spill the beans.... You've piqued my interest. By special tools, do you mean I have to go to Toyota and buy something expensive?

Ha Ha nope........A 3/8 ratchet, 3" n 6" n 12" extensions come in handy especially if you have a swiveling spark plug socket the locks itself onto your extension, hand strength . a little patience, and a few cuts on your hands...unless you wear latex gloves
