Default Transmission shifter problem

My 99 rx300 (85K) shifter is sticking in park, plus not locking in park (rolling back and clicking) Now I have to start it in Nuetral. Has anyone else experienced this?
How do I go about adjusting the shifter linkage? I looked at the shifter mechanism inside and see no visible adjustment. I assume there must be linkage conections at the transmission. Does anyone know how and where to make such an adjustment?

There's a cable running down from the shifter to the transmission. The end of the cable is down by the battery(if you look down) you will see the cable bolt to the Neutral safety switch with a 12 mm nut. One quick check, if you put transmission in park, is the P light on the combination meter light up?. Also try it on all range.
