DIY Engine Light Codes?
Hi all!
I've read some of your threads & it seems you all have mechanics check for codes. Is there a list of codes & their meanings available to us, as well as a way to check the codes yourself? As you can tell by my screen name, I'm in to Mopars, and we're able to do that on our cars. I actually joined you to help a friend w/her IS250, and she's not really knowledgeable about cars.
She had her tires replaced at a Jack Williams chain here in PA & while there had them deal w/her light being on. Unfortunately, it's been on 3 times since. She was just back there yesterday AGAIN for the same thing & 12 hours later it's back on. He said "if it comes on again we'll probably have to replace a sensor", & she told him they did that already. They act as if there's just one magical sensor to solve all problems. And I'm sure they could care less about explaining exactly the issue, if they even know what it is.
Look forward to hearing back from anyone.
Thanx,
Holly

Holly, welcome to the club. Our codes are pretty much the same as they are for all vehicles, with a few manufacturer specific ones added in. Anything since 1996 is the same way, for the most part. If you could get us some information, preferably which code is setting the engine light, we would be more than happy to help. I do diagnostics like that on a daily basis, and although it is hard to diagnose over the internet, we could at least get you close, hopefully.
If they aren't willing to provide the codes, you should be able to go to most auto parts stores and they will pull the code for you.

Thanx guys! Is there any way I can pull the codes myself though? In Chryslers, you just cycle the ignition 3 times & they flash. And in a Chevy I use to have, you could put a paperclip in the spot they plugged the diagnostic computer of the fuse panel to make them flash. I have no doubt they see her as a pretty lady in her lex who knows nothing about cars, or anyone who does.

Mitsuguy is right. Any autoparts store should be able to pull it for you for free. They also provide a generic explanation based on your code. Or your friend could invest in a cheap scanner to pull codes.... Good luck.
