Default Interior lights don't always turn on when door opened

'91 LS

When I open the passenger side front door, either:

1. The interior lights don't turn on
2. The interior lights blink on for a sec and then turn off...looks kind of like when you flip on the lights and the bulb burns out.

When I close the door and open the door again right afterwards, the interior lights always turn on.

I can't figure out why it does this.

The courtesy light switch is bad. Another problem it will cause, headlights don't turn off when exiting car at night. The switch is the one that the door presses against when closed. Has a black rubber cover. Lift up the lower portion of the cover and you will see a 10mm bolt. I've only replaced about a 1000 of them!

Try this, open your door, when the dome light does not come on wiggle the courtesy light switch. Usually the light will then pop on, or at least flicker as you touch it. It's going bad and not properly grounding. Very cheap and easy to replace.

Let us know if I'm right.

Once again, you're right on. I hadn't been able to reproduce the problem, which is usually the case right after I ask about an intermittent problem. Rather ironic...i kept hoping it wouldn't work right so I could try what you said. But it did it tonight, and it's exactly like you said. Any advice on the replacement part # to get and how to go about replacing it would be greatly appreciated!

Just go to your dealer and get it. Maybe $15, part number I don't know. Remove the 10mm bolt and pull it out. You'll see a connector also. SIMPLE
