Question Timing belt- age vs miles?

I just bought a 1996 LS400 with 77,000 miles.

I was wonder what opinions are on the timing belt. If you are supposed to replace it at 90,000 miles, but Lexus would assume that you reached 90,000 long before 12 years old, would you need to replace it because it is 12 yrs old?

Or would you still wait for 90,000 miles?

Not sure how much breakdown they suffer from age vs actual wear.

I don't have an owners manual, sorry if it's covered in there.

Timing belt is recommended with a service interval of 90k miles or 6-7 years, whichever one comes first.

Thanks, I knew the 90,000, hadn't heard talk of a time period.

Thanks for your help.

Being that the car is 10 years old, i would probably go ahead and replace it. Better safe than sorry. Rubber drys up over the years and damages the belt just as much as constant use.

I gotta 99 2GS. I'm gonna wait till 90k. Have 81k on it now. Just keep an eye on it. My belt looks fine, so its all depends on your particular car.

Yes it all depends, so best bet is to check it out. If it looks like it needs a new one, go ahead and do it now. The last thing you want is your timing belt going out because you waited too long to change it. I had mine done at the 60K service because it was starting to crack, but atleast I won't have to worry about it anymore for atleast another 60K miles.

I have a '95 SC300, 124k on her. I believe she's still on the stock timing belt. If it's been changed by the P.O., they left no record of it. I check it at least every oil change. With that many miles on it, it still looks almost brand new. I don't know how, but I sure am thankful. Let's just hope it holds out!
