Default Need to vent - parts issue (resolved)

I recently placed an order with Carson for timing belt, idler pulley, tensioner, water pump, thermostat, lower ball joints, outer tie rods, etc. etc. I got everything fairly quickly except the timing belt whcih took a few weeks. Finally got everything and took it to my mechanic and after he gets everything torn down he calls a few minutes ago to let me know I did not get the water pump gasket and o-rings. I can't get this stuff until Monday which means I am SOL on a ride and the shop is not happy about having my car taking up space for all this extra time.

Cesar says Luiz took my order but the bottom line is the gasket and o-rings should have come with the water pump. They didn't and now I am left holding the bag.

Sorry to hear that, but generally they are really good about things like that... Maybe it wasn't their fault and the waterpump should have had it with it (not sure if you have to buy it separately)...

Couldn't you get the O ring and gasket at a dealer close to you?

I'll wait and talk to Luis tomorrow before I post my experience.

I'm sure they will make it right for you. Sometimes stuff happened, especially a high volume dealer like Carson Toyota. I've deal with them for so many times and they are just outstanding to deal with . FYI, I'm working at a Lexus dealer, but sometime I think it's cheaper and easier for me to buy parts from Carson's .

I dunno but shouldn't your mechanic have checked to make sure he had all the parts for the job before he tore your car apart? Would have saved both you and him some problems.

x2

Any good mechanic would have known to plan things out. I've learned this the hard way. It cost me more in the end because I had to run back and forth from the dealership, and it took a week longer than expected.

First of all I would like to apologize to Carson Toyota for insinuating that this was all their fault. I appreciate Steve Ganz's attempt to help me out. I was able to get what I needed from a local dealer after a couple of trips (needed o-rings and some sealant to connect water pump to a square connector on the top side....I guess it is some sort of intake hole). I did have the main gasket for the water pump all along. My ignorance was a big part of the problem....I didn't have a clue what all I really needed.

I was upset when I had to take so much time away from an extremely important and very busy day at my job to make sure I wasn't without a ride until Monday. Plenty of blame to go around beginning with me.

1. I should have made sure I had everything needed to complete the job before I dropped the car off at the shop.
2. I should have confirmed with the mechanic that he had everything he needed before leaving the car.
3. I would like to think that Luis could have told me what I needed to complete the job. When I explained that I was replacing the timing belt and water pump he pointed out that I should also replace the idler sub assembly, tensioner assembly, and thermostat. He made sure I ordered the gasket for the thermostat but never mentioned anything about O-rings for the water pump or any sealant.

I appreciate the help, advice, and services provided by this forum and the sponsoring vendors. Although I was upset at the time, I would like to think I am man enough to admit that all of this angst could have been prevented with a few prudent precautions on my part. As per most such situations in my past I am the biggest part of the problem.

I sure hope everything is ok by lunch tomorrow. Next up is a fun job for a different shop that is replacing my steering rack bushings, control arm bushings, lower ball joints, outer tie rods, rotors and brake pads all around. They are charging me 10 hrs labor (about $20/hr less than the dealer hourly rate). After all this an alignment and new tires and I should be broke.
