The steering on my wife's '94 ES300 is starting to moan. I see a thin large hex head on the top of the "rack" body. Is this the "nut" you tap counter clockwise with a chisel to get to the filter?
Anyone have a picture to attach?
Thanks.
JU
The barely visible white circular part on the tip of the solenoid is indeed a filter. This one is from a 1st generation LS400.
good luck!

"Every lexus has 2 screens in the power steering system. One is at the bottom of the PSR. The other is on the PWR STR Solenoid. The solenoid on the pwr str rack has to be removed, then the plastic screen simply slides off for cleaning. They are always dirty, I've cleaned many. I would recommend only the mechanically inclined attemp to do this. Or your local mechanic".
Damon,
Thanks for the photo!
I was under the ES300 today replacing the right side axle that "blew the boot". Installed a new balljoint while it was loose and apart.
The solenoid in the picture looks like just like the "thing" attached to the power steering pump in the ES300 series. That is on the rack in the LS series400?
Too much going on to dive into any more projects than I had on my plate as it was.
I'll have to go back under soon and pull it out and change the fluid. it's moaning softly off and on.
The ES models don't have any solenoid filter screens. However, all Toyota / Lexus power steering systems have a metal mesh filter screen inside the power steering fluid reservoir. If the power steering fluid is never changed, the screen begins to get partially clogged after about 10 year and after 25 years the screen is almost completely clogged as you can see in this picture of a 1979 Toyota http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y18...h/psscreen.jpg
