Is it safe to say the reliability of the LX is the same as the Toyota Land Cruiser? I understand some extra luxury features are present in the LX. Not sure whether to stick with the Land Cruiser or get some more luxury with the Lexus.
Our family has had 20+ year old Toyota Land Cruisers and they are unbeatable. It's almost like a family heirloom. In addition, we have many family overseas and they also have Land Cruisers in countries where the roads are complete junk, weather is more extreme than the US and no "expert dealers" to service the vehicle. The simplicity of the Land Cruiser still remains, which is why it's so great to service around the entire world. I sure hope the next generation remains the same because current modern vehicles are not nice to mechanics around the world.

I don't know if there are hard facts, but the LX I'd think would have slightly lower reliability because it has more "bells and whistles" such as air suspension, more electronics, gadgets compared to the LC. I don't think the LX is horrifically unreliable but between the two, I'd say the LC would have slightly better reliability.

I'd suggest that if you KNOW your LX has an "air suspension", I'd take it back to a dealer and have it immediately either exchanged or fixed.
LX suspensions have always been hydraulic assisted.

I suspect he meant "adjustable".Originally Posted by hankinid

That said, the LX has a few more things to go wrong, but none are bleeding edge technology nor are they things that are likely to leave you stranded if they fail - a failed electric 3rd row seat might be annoying, but won't leave you in the middle of Death Valley.

Some of the things that the LX had the LC now has. For example the rear hatch is now auto in the LC as well. Both suffer from the same ailments so I'd say reliability is pretty close between the two.

Note, that on some other markets (where LX is not sold), Land Cruiser may have the same variable hydraulic suspension. So actually, they are the same vehicles. The only features not offered on Land Cruiser anywhere are Mark Levinson audio and HUD.

'06 and '07 Cruisers had AHC...can't recall if it was stock or an option. HUD was also an option and needed a special windshield that's virtually impossible to find now.Originally Posted by ClaytonW

I didn't know this! Although, I should have guessed that due to the current state of sales of vehicles, the LC might be in trouble.Originally Posted by cssnms

I would hope the LX would continue with the same over-engineering but the LX is based on the LC, so that remains to be seem.
edit: Looks like some new threads popping up discussing the fate of both the LC and LX.

The consideration of dropping of the LC is for the US only. The LC is Toyota's hot seller in many other parts of the world and that isn't changing.Originally Posted by HouseB328

Not sure what you mean by "the LC might be in trouble". Toyota sells every 200 series exported to the North American market, and generally dealers get what they need as do owners. Recent numbers indicate around 7000 200 series were exported to NA...around 3000 Land Cruisers and 4000 or so LX's.Originally Posted by HouseB328

I don't see either Land Cuiser or LX sales dropping, and both are and have been way over engineered

Unfortunately, LC200 is not sold in EU from 2016. Just outside EU - Russia etc. But, you can still purchase LC200 in most EU countries - imported from countries outside EU. Surprisingly, car import laws in EU are less strict than in USA. This is the same way how you can still buy brand new Land Cruiser 70 series in EU although not oficially imported. Stupid US laws...Originally Posted by hankinid

Both Toyota Land Cruiser and the Lexus LX give users peace of mind in terms of reliability. Even the older 10+yr old LX470 still performs flawlessly. Yes the LX does have more gadgets - more things can go wrong, but none can be catastrophic (like engine / tranny). Very very rare a Toyota / Lexus will get your stranded on a road trip. I've seen many BMW (4yr old 5 series), Land Rovers (Range Rover), Audi (S7) stuck in the middle of no where (like when you are on a 400 miles road trip).... I do expect something may fail eventually in LC / LX over 15yrs of normal usage, but again nothing should get your stuck. If you only keep cars for 3-4yrs, anything should be ok. But I personally tend to keep my car for over 15yrs (over 200k miles), trust Toyota / Lexus.

The LX and LC differ in a few aspects. You do have more "gizmos" that a NADM LC will not have. However in the overall scheme of things, both will outlast probably any competitor vehicle out there. In addition a new LX has gone for the same as a sticker LC, while now LCs can be had for invoice new.
In the used market though, LXs historically have gone for a bit less then a LC. Now with the advent of the GXOR and Lexus's recognition of their BOF SUVs capabilities as an Overlander, speculators in the market will probably end of pricing the LXs at the bare minimum in the same class pricing wise as the LC, unless the LX has a fatal flaw that has yet to surface as these things age
In regards to the LC bowing out after MY22, well we shall see what they do, smart move from a business case wise, but also means, if you love LCs better get a move on before speculators pick em like nothing.
