I am new to the forum and this is my first post. Glad to be here. I currently own a 2015 1794 tundra and a 2016 GSF. I am looking to add a Lexus SUV to the stable and I am currently looking at a 2015 lx 570 with 36,000 miles for $ 59,000.00 fully loaded, black on black. The other lx 570 I am looking at is a 2016 with 12,000 miles for $ 79,000.00 in nebula gray on black, fully loaded. I have driven both. From a driving experience I like the 2015 better. It felt like it had better throttle response and more acceleration, and it handled well for a 6000 pound vehicle. Although I liked the updated look of the 2016 and the new updates the 2016 has received on the interior, along with some of the technology upgrades. I was just curious and looking for some help from lx owners if you guys feel the 2016 with the latest upgrades and 8 speed transmission is worth $ 20,000.00 more than the 2015. I have done extensive research as far as depreciation and value retained, and in that regard the 2015 seems to be the smarter buy from a retained value and depreciation standpoint. I really like both vehicles and I would really value forum members advice on which they feel would be the better way to go.

The fact that surprised me is for such a first class SUV, I feel the best SUV you can buy, how much it depreciates compared to other Lexus automobiles and some Toyota vehicles. For example at 6 years old and 90,000 miles a lx 570 only retains 43 percent of its value. Around 62 percent at 4 years and 60,000 miles, about the same as a f 150 platinum pick up truck.

well your thoughts are spot on. The 2016+ versions dont drive well at all. I dont care how big a diehard fan you are.
Until they improve it, i would not buy it.
Yeah, it really goes down because its a higher end vehicle. Same goes for porsche and others. The more it cost, the higher it depreciates.

I would not buy a car without a blind spot monitor/rear cross traffic alert.

thats two of the reasons I have been hesitant on the 2015 lx 570. I just can not decide if the extra $ 20,000.00 is worth blind spot monitor and some of the other upgrades that come with the 2016.

 

well i like the 2016+ style and looks very much but I know whats coming down the road.
Its technology is mediocre and no where near that of Audi and RR (dashboard techs) or Subaru eyesight
I agree each year has its plus and minus.
Just put a wide angle view mirror on side and you will be fine.
i have one on my GX even though i have blind spot.
The blind spot indicator being outside is damn stupid if you ask me.
It should be on instrument cluster next to turn signal.
And the damn pre collision system sucks compared to subaru.

 

i really loved the driving dynamics of the 2015 lx 570, but I just wish it wasn't so far behind other luxury SUVs in terms of technology. Although I feel that both the land cruiser and the lx 570 are the 2 best SUVs in terms of engineering and off road capabilities. Although at $ 59,000.00 the lx 570 2015 is a good buy.

or maybe I should just buy a f 150 platinum loaded with all the technology you can get on a pickup truck.

 

My two cents...

Personally, unless I was off-roading and needed the slightly better approach/departure angles of the pre-2016 LX, I would go with the newer model. Our 2010 was a fantastic vehicle, but IMHO, our 2017 is otherwise superior in every way. It also drives better, actually, and feels more responsive to me. This is subjective, of course, and you've expressed a preference for the 2015 unit, so I am not trying to persuade you either way (and $20k is friggin' $20k, for crying out loud!).

Having said this, if I were looking for a pre-2016, I would find it hard to spend $59k on a vehicle that is arguably outdated in many ways and - in essence - identical to a 2014 and 2013. I know these are not always easy to find, but a "third option" might be a '13 or '14. They do pop up with reasonable mileage and could make the financial component even more compelling.

 

Thank you for the reply and info. I see you are from Massachusetts. The two lx 570's I am looking at are in hingham at herb chambers. I have to say herb chambers lexus has been great to deal with so far. I have been going back and forth with them for about 3 weeks now and they have been first class. The first time I test drove the 2015 they actually drove it to Hampton, nh and met me half way so I did not have to deal with the Boston traffic. I thought that was very generous.

You brought up some very valid points. And the points you bring up are the only reason why I have not pulled the trigger on the 2015. As I said, I like the driving dynamics of the 15 better, but I like the tech and the redesign of the 16 better. Very tough decision. The other thing I like about the 2015 is it comes with 20 inch tires, which is better in the snow and easier to find dedicated snow tires for. We get a lot of snow up here from January to April.

The other option I was thinking about was just buying a used 2016 Land Cruiser for around $ 65,000.00 and you get the 8 speed transmission and the latest technology. My third option, or should I say fourth option is going to be to just trade in the tundra and buy a loaded F 150 platinum with all the bells and whistles and be done with it.

I love toyota/lexus, and I have a ton of respect for them, but I just wish they would be ahead of the technology curve sometimes and not behind it. With Lexus you are paying absolute top dollar for some of there vehicles and I guess you are paying for build quality, engineering, and reliability not gadgets.

It's completely unacceptable that BSM was not available on the LX until 2016. It debuted for the 2013 GS, ES, and RX as an option, but to omit it from your flagship SUV for that long is just

I/ve opted not to spend $20 large on the blind spot monitor and some other upgrades. The front end "styling" and eight-speed transmission imo are not "upgrades", just changes from prior years. Meh.


That's an ongoing complaint in some corners with Land Cruisers and LX trucks. Normally, those comments don't come from areas of the world where the Cruiser or LX is about the only thing that can not only get you to your destination, but also get you back with no mechanical surprises.

Only you can decide whether you want an F-150 or a 200 series truck...not even apples-and-oranges...more like bananas-and-venison.

My take on more automotive "technology"...

In 2015, Toyota exported only ~ 7000 200 series trucks to all of North America. Contrast that to ~ 75K 4Runners and Lord knows how many RX. If Toyota has a new electronic widget, far easier to put it in trucks or cars with orders of magnitude more exposure than the 200s. If my next Toyota full-size SUV comes with more extra electronic gadgets, I'd prefer to have some that were tested in the field for a few years before I get them. If you love electronics, check some of the lines that say they "compete" with the 200 and enjoy your decrease in reliability. Simple

 

Radar Cruise Control, Autonomous braking, Automatic High Beams, Lane assist, Cross traffic alert, 360 degree birds eye view camera. 12 inch display, rear 12 inch displays with HDMI input. I owned a 2015 LX and traded for a 2017. Worth every cent. And some. 2016 is the beast choice All the WAY!

 

The new styling will take some time to "love" 🤔. I like the front on the 13-15 models, Not as much on the 08-11's. Loved the looks of the 100 series. My 1995 FZJ80 Landcruiser was the best looking beast. Of course all this is just opinion, which means nothing to anyone but me. Been driving for 50+ years never had a problem "not" having blind spot and the other tech. I like to drive and when I do I like to be involved in the experience, I think it's safer being involved and not relying on all this tech. JMHO

 

Well someone pulled out in front of me 2 weeks ago and it would have been a sure t-bone. But my LX alerted me a started braking faster than I could have. Plus the full color headsup display keeps my eyes on the road. I will take the tech. And I have been driving with out it for almost 40 years. I also have a CDL and have driven professionally. I remember my grandfather doubting the electric windows. Now who rolls up there windows manually? Yesterday in Sam's club the credit card system was down and they were on cash and checks only. The lines wrapped around the store worse than black friday. I pulled out my phone used the Sam's scan and go app. Scanned the items as I put them in my cart, Hit pay and walked out the door. I Told everyone in line but as usual, Ignorance and fear of technology kept them in the long lines with their checkbooks. I love old cars and my 1999 LX470 is my favorite vehicle but no one can deny the time saving and safety features of the new vehicle. Which is why I also have a 2017 LX570. Who still pulls out the Rand McNally Road Atlas that I use to buy every years???? Exactly my point. Keep up or get left out.
