Default My LS430 side mirror fix

Recently picked up a used 2004 LS430 and it suffered from the passenger mirror not going up/down problem (from switch or via memory setting). Cleaning the control switch contacts did not work, so opted to dive into the mirror assembly.

I dissassembled the mirror assembly using info from other posts on this forum.

After making sure there was voltage getting to the up/down motor (used a 12VDC test light), I removed the whitet motor assembly (houses 2 small motors), opened it and removed the small motors (they are 3340 07E28 AMSO with a worm gear), and put 12Vdc across its terminals. I could see it was trying to run, but would stop.

I applied some light gear oil to the front and back bearing areas, spun the worm gear, and then put 12Vdc on it again....voila, spun fast in both directions.

Put the mirror assembly back together and all works just fine. Now to see if this is just a short term fix or if I need to find a replacement motor (it looks like a $2 part!)

So, if other fixes still leave you with a mirror that will not adjust, and you are willing to take it apart, this may work.

Do you have pics of the repair? Perhaps you could post the steps, plus any tools and parts you used.

I regret not taking pictures of what I did...need to be better at that.

I used this link to remove the mirror plate from the assembly (thanks songzunhuang)

and this link to guide remaining disassembly (thanks SerasLibre)....follow link in posting to more photos.

Popping the mirror out from the bottom was initially disconcerting since it took quite a bit of force. I did trim off some of the plastic from each snap clip on the mirror backing so it will be easier the next time (if there is a next time). There is another link somewhere to get the mirror out in two steps...first is remove the plastic trim and then pry mirror off of its mounting plate...can't find that link again.

No special tools needed. Just basic philips head and needle nose. A test meter or light is helpful to see if voltage is getting to the electric motor plug (circular plugs described below) to ensure problem is the motor, not elsewhere.

This is the motor housing that is held onto the metal plate with 3 plastic clips

This picture shows it from the back with the plugs (the circular white plug is on the l/r motor. The u/d motor has a black circular plug).

The position sensor (black plastic with the two prongs that press against back of mirror) simply slides off the motor housing.

The motor housing has three small plastic clips holding the halves together. Only thing inside are two small electric motors.

Here is link to the manufactures site of what the motor looks like without the worm gear.

I did not see if this motor is available for purchase individually.

I need to fix my passenger mirror, but sadly most of the links above are dead links now.
