Question 2018 vs 2019

I've owned a bunch of Lexus (Lexi?) including a 430 sedan and 2 460 sedans. I'm thinking about an '18 or '19 with luxury and PREFERABLY with executive package. BUT... as has been discussed here Consumer Reports reader responses suggest truly catastrophic engine problems on the 2018 and I read a thread here of someone on their 3rd engine and finally lemon-lawed out of the car. I place a high degree of confidence in CR because it's not a subjective review but rather simply crunching real-world numbers of people who own the car. (As a subscriber, I get my very, very detailed survey every year.)

SO... I see lots of you here have had a good experience with '18s but I've never seen anything like the CR reliability review. Does anybody know if the problems are the same for '19s? Did they make any changes to the engine? (CR doesn't have enough data to rate the '19s yet.) I can't imagine having to buy an extended warranty on a 3-year-old Lexus flagship but on the other hand... YIKES!

Does anybody have any thoughts, opinions, hard data, dealer info, mechanic's perspective, etc.? Is the twin-turbo 6 just a ticking time bomb as CR suggests?

I don't want to spend $60k-70k and end up regretting my decision. I've NEVER had any concerns about buying a Lexus before but CR has me spooiked.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

I would say that was a one off and I haven't had any issues with mine "knock on wood", nor have I heard any major issues with them, most of the issues are with the infotainment and missing features that some have stated. My car is currently at 35,440 miles right now and seems to be running very smooth with no issues. I would say the Turbos are probably built way better than the Germans in terms of reliability. I have brought my car to the dealer for only a couple of small issue's one being the battery which could have been due to my dash camera, the other issue was the accessory belt and pulley. Other than that I haven't had any issues. Granted I have an F-Sport with no air ride as its not offered in the US on AWD F-Sport models, maybe those owners can chime in.

Do you have a link to the 2018 issues on www.consumerreports.org?
This is the first I've heard of it. Not saying you're not right, just would like to read more about it.

I'm surprised about the engine, transmission is mostly the complaints, (I think from my view) mostly from the lag in the tranny as I dont think there have been major problems with it but I could be wrong just haven't seen a news on any sites.

I would be shocked if Toyota didn’t make the 3.5TT reliable. Remember, this is the same engine that is going into the LC300 Landcruiser and the upcoming Tundra.

Any threads about this? I too am looking at the 2022 Tundra and came here looking for info on the TT V6 reliability. I was surprised to see the consumer reports gave it the worst rating for reliability (ENGINE MAJOR, ENGINE MINOR, FUEL SYSTEM, BRAKES, BODY INTEGRITY). That was for the 2018 model year only, they didn't have enough info for the newer years, therefore leaving them blank.

This doesn't bode well for the upcoming Tundra. Even though it's supposed to be a hybrid (one of the pics of the engine cover had blue indicating a hybrid engine).

However, I would be SURPRISED that if Toyota would risk their stellar reliability reputation and release a turd.

Thx...

Just get the hybrid instead. No issue reported with that engine.

Lexus was stupid and foolish to put that twin turbo v-6 in that LS to begin with. The latest gen LS is sluggish, and does not have the refinement of the old v-8 in the prior gen. The Prius Shifter is a royal joke in the latest LS. Not to mentioned the cramped rear seat. They should just take the V-8 out of the LC 500 and simply put it into the LS. How many of the latest gen LS's do you even see on the road?

I currently own a 2018 LS 500 executive package. the only issues I’ve experienced so far is the rear sunshade jammed and the run flats wear out fast. The engine and transmission runs smooth. The transmission tends to have a little bit of lag but I’ve also experienced this in my last generation Ls460.

I have a 2019 and just did the 30k service. Mechanics at the dealer did not find anything to repair. Maintenance only.

FWIW, Consumer Reports is based on members reporting their experiences. How many members own a 2018 LS and how many participated in the survey? Their summation could be based on a small number of 2018 cars and be completely inaccurate. When they report on Toaster ovens, there are thousands of owners reporting in. Compared to Club Lexus, we have many more owners of 2018 LS and would likely have had many threads about major issues if this were the case.

Don’t go with the 1st year model of any vehicle. I didn’t get the 2018 because it didn’t have Apple CarPlay. I was able to score a 2019 LS at an Audi dealer. They were just trying to get rid of it a few years ago. Purchased the LS with the luxury package for the price of a base.
