Will the tariff on imported cars begin April 2?
Will it apply to new unsold cars already in the U.S.?
Will new base LS500s suddenly be priced over 100 grand?
Lexus builds ES and TX models in the United States. The IS, GX, LC, LS, LX, NX, RC, RZ, and UX models are built in Japan. The plug-in hybrid RX450+ is also built in Japan while the rest of the RX lineup and some NX models are built in Canada.

I bet some sneaky dealers will try to collect the incremental on cars already in stock but those should not be subject to the tariff.
LS500 sales are minuscule. Seems a 25% tariff would pretty much kill this model if it stays in effect very long.
I hope parts won’t be a problem.
It will be interesting to see what Toyota’s response to this will be if the tariff happens. Maybe they will start producing a fancier AWD ES for the U.S. market? They could load it up with every option possible and badge it an LS. Maybe do some cosmetic sheet metal changes and turbocharge it?
But the ES will also have the 25% tariff...... Like all foreign cars. Lucky me, i live in the EU.
That 25% tariff is good for your government, not so good for you hard working people.
Sajack, that would be the perfect solution for me. We had a ES350 and loved it but it was two wheel drive. My wife wanted AWD so we test drove a ES250. What a dog! Terribly underpowered. We found out the LS500 has a AWD optionʻ so thatʻs what we went with. If the ES had AWD with a decent powertrain I would be all over it.
Front wheel drive, in most regions of the country, is perfectly fine in most situations. The automakers have brainwashed the consumer into thinking it's necessary. Regardless, in the U.S., the ES350 is available in AWD form.
Gigoofy, I agree FWD is fine in most cases. If you could convence my wife of that I would really appreciate it. Itʻs her car, she wants AWD, end of story. I believe you are mistaken about the ES350 being available in AWD though. I just went on the Lexus website and the only ES I saw in AWD is the ES250 with the 4 cylender non turbo. Do you know of another?
The Trump tarifs are unclear as to the vehicle is assembled in the US or does that include components/parts. Most vehicles have many parts assembled outside the US and imported into the US (such as computer chips - remember the shortage of chips coming from overseas, screens manufactured in Korea, etc..). If all components of the vehicle is manufactured in the US we have a bigger problem - this will affect the big 3 American car manufacturers, Tesla, etc...
What a mess!
What's the old saying - If it isn't broken don't fix it!
