Hi. Question: after replacing the fuel pump gasket, I smell fuel. When I park car in the garage, and leave it overnight, I can smell it the next morning in my garage.
is it possible that the fuel is coming from the spark plug area or anything? I don’t see any leaks from the fuel pump itself. I put my hand there and it was all dry around the high pressure fuel pump. I’m trying to see where it could be from! The hoses are on correctly and the clamps are on the hose too! Should I be worried?
This is my ignorance, but isn't the fuel pump in the tank?
But to answer your question, yes you absolutely should be worried. A gas leak is nothing to be ignored.
A few years ago I smelled gas in my 612. I didn't see any gas anywhere, but the panels under the car were collecting it. It turns out one of the fuel caps on the top of the tank was cracked. Here is a photo of the gas squirting out.
LS460 has 2 fuel pumps on the top of the engine as well as in the tank.
I tightened the damper literally as tight as I possibly could (I’m weak, no joke here). I used an adjustable wrench since I don’t have access to a 7/8 wrench in the garage. I think I have less leverage using an adjustable wrench so that could be why. Anyway it appears as though I no longer smell fuel. I don’t think it even budged when I tried to tight it a bit but hey, I’m happy!! Going to drive it a few days to confirm that it no longer has the fuel smell. Really hoping it doesn’t!!
if it does, I’ll remove the two washers on the fuel pump damper and check it out again. But for now (as of driving it for 20 min), I am happy! This forum is great. Thanks for everyone’s help!
I suggest you get a set of good wrenches, it makes life much easier. Lexus/Toyota uses metric system. You might want to get a set of new washers for the pulsation damper just in case. If you ever have to replace it again, make sure you don't scratch any of the washers.

sounds good. I only have up to size 19mm for my wrench set. Should I go bigger?
Yep, I already have 2 metal washers available for the pulsation dampers hehe.
i think I know why it smelled like fuel! I didn’t change the aluminum washer gaskets as others have mentioned. Anyway lesson learned and for those who are gunna change their fuel pump gaskets in the future, be sure to get new washers/gaskets for the damper valve!!!
