Default Muffler Help

Quick catch up: I started noticing a lot of noise coming from the rear end of my car that sound like deep bass when the car is idling. The sound is mainly only noticeable at lower rpms like idling and when lightly accelerating at highway speeds.

I took it to my local muffler shop and they noticed they aren’t getting as much air as they thought they should coming out of the tail pipe. The piping seemed pretty healthy too. Since all the sound was coming from the rear behind the pipes leading to the muffler, they claim and I agreed that the mufflers were bad.

I couldn’t actually get them fixed today because of time restraints. Tuesday I will drop the car off then they will remove the muffler, size it up and get one from a warehouse nearby. They will replace them for around $350 out the door. He said in the mean time if I want to use a particular brand get it and make sure and get the gasket to match and he will install it for me. First time being here but these are some stand up guys!

For people who may have already gotten a muffler replacement on these cars. Do you have a recommendation? What make and model muffler did they install on your car? And do you like it? I want to keep the car sounding stock. I hate that slight drone.

I replaced mine at my local exhaust shop. They did some measurements to determine what to order. Turned out, the closest fit was for a Chev Cavalier (GT I think). I paid about 500 bucks installed all in. They were aluminum, so they only lasted 4 years. If I had spent a hundred more or so, they would have installed SS versions.

I remember reading your informative opinion on the them. Truly I thought this was the cars natural sound. I thought this was the V8 sound everybody claimed they loved because it’s beefy but civilized. I rode in my friends LS of the same year and couldn’t believe the difference. His engine was whisper quiet... I want my car like that. It’s crazy how much difference a good muffler makes.

After the muffs were replaced, I installed Oliver Enterprise's exhaust vents. For me, that resulted in the best sound. Perfect blend of quiet luxury, but then the nice exhaust note when accelerating. Never obnoxious , annoying or loud. Just an authoritive burble.

Got the muffler replaced and I am hating them. Sorry guys I’m the weirdo that wants an absolutely silent car. When it’s idling the exhaust note as extremely bassy as If a sub is in the back playing a 34hz sine wave. However, On the interstate it is pretty silent. What can I do about this? Do you think shortening the tail pipe could result in a new tone similar to shortening or lengthening a bass port on a speaker?

I replaced my rusted out ones with OEM ones using mylparts CL code. Got both for a little under 900 shipped.

I’m not even sure. They are a bit skinnier and they are painted from the factory. They look good but they are not my speed.
