Default Need info ASAP re: acoustic windshield

Haven't been around the forum much lately due to being heavily involved in RV related sites lol. I need some info....

Long story short, I need a new windshield and my local shop says that the insurance company won't pay for a Lexus windshield - aftermarket only. I don't care either way, except that they tell me that the aftermarket doesn't carry a windshield that has acoustic glass. They also claim that acoustic glass isn't an option on the LS in 2008. I could have sworn it was available.

Soooo.... can any of you provide any info that I can arm myself with when dealing with my insurance company? The good news is that I have a zero deductible. The windshield they're offering is a Pilkington (which I'm fine with). But again....no acoustic.

My glass insurance covers OEM glass when replacement is needed. I heard after market glass does not work well with rain sensing wiper option.
My own random guess is acoustic glass supposes to shield noise.

My vehicle is deemed too old to qualify for OE. Yes "acoustic glass" is sound-deadening. I also know that Lexus offered replacement of side windows to acoustic in a TSB. I just want the windshield to be acoustic to cut down on wind noise on the freeway.

It is acoustic glass; see page 4 on this PDF: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...P5ZVTGy4ujTEZr

FWIW, before looking for the Toyota Pressroom PDF, I went in the garage to see what I could find out. My windshield says Lamipane, and my side windows say Lamisafe; LX says Lamisafe in front and Temperlite on sides, but this is not conclusive. I started reading up on glass specifications, and it seems like in most cases, acoustic glass will say so (or have a picture of an ear). My 600 has neither, but it definitely has acoustic glass based on everything I've read, and well, so do '08 460s according to the official product information doc you can share with your friendly insurance company.

Thanks CAHA, I too found that document and already printed it off for my broker. Lamipane etc means that the windshield is laminated - as is the norm since the 60's, which I'm sure you knew. Thanks for you input. Hopefully this will be enough proof for my broker.

Some years back, when my 460 had some paintwork done, I used this document to support my request for additional wet-sanding (i.e., less orange peel) on the basis of "hand sanding at the factory". So, I trust it should work for you!

So, the "Lami" half I knew; what threw me off was Lamipane on one windshield (LS) and Lamisafe on the other (LX). I thought one might be acoustic, and the other not, and while this is actually the case, the "pane" vs. "safe" part is - in itself - not a key indicator. I learned a bunch about windshield codes and stampings last night

Please keep us posted!

What’s the price difference? Guess worst case is to pay the difference and get oem.

My 08 has a aftermarket front windshield. No winter package on car so no heated lower edge for wipers.

replacement glass does have the auto wiper module in it and works well.

No wind noise up to 120.

The side windows have slight gold tint in them for UV and infrared blocking,

the aftermarket does not match the oem tint.

looked at a dealer stock) LS and its windshield had the same slight gold tint to it.

the aftermarket glass says “solar tint” on it but I have no idea what that means

the slight tint difference is not readily noticeable unless you are looking for it.

kind of works out as Wife is a avid phototog and through the windshield shots have a more neutral color which helps her.

glass has no visible aberrations or distortion in it.

No noise. Maybe hotter in front without the exact oem glass

Roadfrog, if you want any feedback on RV stuff, hit me up.

We've had a 40' diesel pusher since August 2002, and I'll take that beast anywhere. Been to 49 states, 9 provinces, one territory with it. Full-timed for about five years, then I had to go back to work.

Its definitely acoustic. That should be grounds to get them to pay for an OEM windshield.

As for cost difference, its huge. Aftermarket windshield is maybe $400. OEM in like $1,600.

While I agree that the oem is “acoustic” it may be for the stereo? Not wind noise.

actually quite likely as the laminated aftermarket windshield has zero noise.

The other thing is the oem windshield high rejection of both uv and infrared may and probably does protect the vinyl dash itself from sun damage.

almost for sure the acoustic is for the stereo and the system was built for the exact glass resonating qualities, high quality engineering.

plus the uv and infra red..

i seem to notice a fair amount of heat coming from the top windshield area.

but I have a black car.

need feedback from other owners..?

wondering if the aftermarkets “solar tint” allows more through or it heats up itself?

Does the oem windshield get physically hot in the sun driving?

mine does.

May well change the glass back to oem for the above reasons if correct.,...

The acoustic glass is definitely for noise reduction, not for the radio.

while your post surely seems correct how did you arrive at that fact?

My aftemarket windshield like all others is laminated glass. Unless the “acoustic” part of the description refers to weather conditions like heavy rain, sleet, hail or some such other conditions or maybe a combo of those conditions and high speed the windshield under normal conditions exhibits no noises

or is the “acoustic” a combo of both the weather AND the reflection of the stereo dash speakers which obviously rechannel the sounds.

anyone know for sure?

sure need some feedback on the heating issue I mentioned that my black car has....

This is 100% accurate. I looked into this before in relation to my Toyota Sienna. The fist year the Sienna had an acoustic front windshield,on the limited trim at least, was 2013 which was a plus when I was comparing the 2012 vs 2013. It is supposed to reduce outside noise. Now whether one can tell the difference outside of the labratory, probably not given the collection of noises coming into the cabin.

may I ask where that was written down?
