Remanufactured steering rack
Hi Guys,
My 80,000mi 09' LS460L w/air is having some steering issues. Sometimes I have some "on-Center" gritty feel when turning at local speeds. And at any speed above 60mph the car drifts to the left. Wheels, tires, front end, & alignment were checked but Lexus said that my steering rack is bad, and I was quoted about $5k for a replacement.
Does anyone here have any experience with a remanufactured electric steering rack? I've searched already but could not find any answers.

Looks like the AC Delco racks are $540 with a $200 core. That doesn't sound all that bad. Good to know if I ever need one. And A1 Cardone rebuilds them for $430...probably somethi I wouldn't consider because why ship your rack and wait for it to be rebuilt and shipped back when you can get a remanufactured unit for a hundred more?
The question I guess I would have is, do these have to be programmed or are they just plug and play? I imagine if you install it in the same position the old one came out, and make sure the tie rods are adjusted the same...you should be good. Not sure though.

I definitely would not pay that for a fix/replacement, it is just a big waste of money. Take it to a independent or Toyota dealership and see what they say or the prices they give because Lexus dealership prices are just ridiculous.

Still better than anything else in it's class out there. Heck, fixing ANYTHING at ANY dealership is expensive. My car has never been to the dealer for anything other than a transmission flush and brake flush. EVER.

Just because the LS may be better then notoriously unreliable Germans it is still not a excuse especially when they are charging over $5000 to fix a bad steering rack. I never even heard of needing a new steering rack on a modern car with less then 100K miles and am shocked others have had the same issue with this car, why did they not design the steering rack/system to be more durable?

So in my opinion, it's durable.
