Default RPM around 1500 when starting?

Have my 2012 LS 460 for 3 weeks now, drove about 250 miles. Every time I start the car RPM is around 1500. Does it seem high? I thought usually RPM will be high starting only when temperature is cold.?

Does it go down after about 30 seconds to a minute?
And when warm, does it still start at 1500?

I don't think so, it does now go down after a minute.

I am in TX so every time I start the car it is hot in the garage! Yes like I said it starts at 1500 RPM

RPMs should quickly go down to around 700, particularly in Texas heat.

You may have a bad engine temp sensor. They often don't just fail but report bad info to the computer without any kind of code. It sounds like the car thinks the engine is cold when it's really not.

thanks all.

I had a typo in my 2nd post. I "do" mean the RPM "won't" go down even after starting the car a couple of minutes in hot TX!

Is this a concern which I should bring it to the auto shop or, it is not something to worry about?

I don't have any warranty so I need to pay for any repairs

Do you recall the car behaving like that on the test drive before purchase? On ours it will jump to 2000 RPM at startup but immediately drop to 1200 (AC on) then 1000 RPM within 30 seconds and then I go. If it was me and the RPMs stayed stuck at 1500 then I'd take it to my mechanic to check. Are you sure your foot isn't resting on the gas pedal (asking seriously)?

As others have said, it should idle down pretty quick. It should not idle continuously at 1,500 RPM.

Mine seems to get close to 2k rpms when cold start. When its getting up there, there are some sounds I do not want to hear.

ABbirds - Even if your garage is 120°F, if the engine has sat over night, it is "cold." Every single time I start mine from "cold" it hits 1,500 - 1,600 rpm. I've never timed it, but if I were to let it keep idling, I want to say it starts to slowly creep down after about 5 to 10 seconds. But I don't give it a second thought. I crank it, drop it into gear and ease on out. I wouldn't bother to take it to the dealer for this.

I recommend to download the Carista app. If it has a code, or a code pending, the app will let you know. I continuously get a hidden error code. I forget exactly what it is, but it has something to do with the HVAC sensor calibration. And what I read about it, this happens to vehicles parked in garages, because the sensor doesn't see the sun in the garage. Something like that.

I wouldn't take it to the dealer because you'll likely be informed you need a new engine, a sunroof & TPMS sensor replacement to fix the problem.
