Default Confused - 2009 Ls460 DVD/Nav Update

I have searched through 7 pages of search results regarding the 2009 LS460 DVD/NAV update.. Maybe my search terms are off, but am I understanding this correctly? There's no DIY for updating the 2009 LS460 Nav? In previous/other models, I recall putting in a DVD (in the glovebox).. hitting an "update" button in the NAV menu...voila.

I can't seem to find a clear answer on this question. is this something you *have* to have the dealer do? Again this is for a 2009 LS460.

I think the update has to be done by the dealer. Last year, they wanted $400 to update the maps on my previous car, a 2012 LS. I said no thanks, and used google maps instead.

Can only go through the dealer unless you have the equipment. Dealer was charging me a little over $200. You're better off putting that money towards the Gromaudio unit.

Augh, that SUCKS. Something so likely very simple.. made complicated. I get it if Lexus wanted to charge customers for the Map Update CD/DVD.. a lot of work goes into that. But then to not give the customers an easy way to update? Lame.

To update the 'new' navi (late 09+) you need a special kit AND a dvd. Not available to public AND expensive. The kit includes a special usb cable that plugs into the glovebox USB port and allows an upload to be performed.
OR you can extract the HDD from the navi headunit and perform a manual update. Search.

Does that somehow replace the integrated NAV? Looks kind of like a multi-input-to-aux device.

So- I will look in the Glovebox and see if there's a USB port. I'm not sure if mine is "late" 2009 or not. But after reading the Owner's Manual, it never mentioned a USB port. Assuming it's the OLDER system, is it still like the old LS430, where you take the CD/DVD tray out of the trunk and replace the disc? Or, is it actually a HDD? I will search those terms, so thanks for the guidance.

It's an aux input that will allow you to run apps. You're better off running google maps or waze instead of paying a few hundred for updates.

Hopefully it'll be available soon. Rumors swirling that it's delayed. I'd get it now if I could.
