Question 2009 LS460 eats battery in 2 yrs

my 2009 LS460 's battery was replaced in March 2013 by Lexus dealer. on the battery it has a sticker "02/13", it has Lexus logo and says 84 month warranty.

and today the battery went dead, after jump start and driving the car for 1 hr. shut off engine, and the battery has voltage of 10.5 V. seems the battery can not hold enough charge.

just wonder if Lexus would offer any compensation on this pre-mature failure of the battery, anyone has similar experience? thanks a lot.

BTW, replacing the LS460 battery is pretty simple as well. and it seems that Walmart has better price than many other auto stores, for $100.

and it would be better if the LS460 could detect the up-coming battery failure and give some warning.

Well if it had a 84 month warranty then it should at least be prorated. Some battery companies give a full free replacement if the battery fails within 3 years and then prorate it after that.

Thanks a lot for making the point. that's good point. considering even some Walmart battery offers 3 yr free replacement and pro-rate after that.

My Lexus-installed battery failed within the 2 year mark (they installed a new one, with a fresh 2 year warranty on it)....so similar issues like yours.

Like others said, you should be able to go back to Lexus and they would pro-rate you a new one (I'd guess you'd have to pay $20-$30 out of pocket) but wouldn't hurt to ask and check?

Trust me you don't want that. There are some cars that monitor battery life which sounds good in theory but then you have to deal with malfunctioning sensors, the complexity of the electronics modules and all the glitches that come with it.
Keeping it simple like Toyota has is just one annoyance when the battery fails not one hundred like it is with the Europeans.

agree... another option is to have a simple battery tester that are on sale in e.g. amazon, and regularly test the battery.

Before you blame the battery, are you sure you're alternator is putting out the required voltage?

I'm stunned that many here feel 2 years lifespan on a factory Panasonic battery is "normal". Panny's are arguably the best battery you can buy (hence the hefty price for a new one). I believe something else is going on.

seems i need to get one of the battery testers, it can also tell the condition of the alternator..

Sorry, but this is aiming for low expectations, especially for a Lexus.

I don't agree, at all. The whole point of buying a Lexus is so that we know that our many sensors, and features are designed reliably and are built to last for years and years. We want the luxury AND the reliability. And for the most part, Lexus has delivered on that premise. No need to stop now.

There comes a point where these extra features come at the expense of reliability for the money.
It is not worth having sensors that monitor sensors and so on until you complicate the vehicle to the point where it becomes expensive for such little gain and a sea of false sensor errors. This is exactly the BMW experience I choose to avoid.
Toyota may add such features in the future once they become reliable at it's cost point but for now there is no need to irritate the ownership experience with the car crying wolf.
