Default 09 Lexus LS460 AWD Rear Thud??

Just got car over the weekend. Bought it used. It has 68k miles and is CPO.

I noticed when driving this weekend if a road has a drop off or a bump that both tires hit it sounds like the rear suspension bottoms out (thud sound).

I had to take the car back to the dealer for them to fix some scratches and I mentioned this to them. I told them I wanted it checked out.

Our sales person said he spoke with the tech and he claimed the for the "AWD" it may be normal for them to do that??? This car also has the factory Air Ride. From my research it seems these models are known for some strut issues. Any recommendations?

Yeah it's at Hendrick Lexus right now. Like I said in my post the technician told the salesman the noise I heard may be normal for the AWD, but they would still test drive and look at it.

My issue is the tech saying it may be normal? I've ridden over the same streets for years it my IS350 and never heard a noise like that and my car was lowered on springs.

I didn't know if anyone on here as had the same experience with there LS460 AWD w/ air ride. 1st car I've owned with factory air ride, and 1st LS460. So i don't know whats considered "normal" or "defective" for these cars far as the ride quality.

Sounds like your talking about someone who is not the brightest bulb on the tree. Take it to another Lexus dealer. With CPO you can go to any dealer, not just the place you purchased. Second opinions never hurt!

Take it to Russ Miller at Flow Lexus in Winston. Flow has a great service team, I have had Lexus of many years and have always had much better service and luck with Flow.

Could it be the spare tire? Maybe the twist thing isn't tightly screwed down and the tire is just jumping when you hit a bump? I would pull up the carpet in the trunk and check that...

If they tell you this is normal say "OK, let's take another AWD 460 out to see if that one makes this "normal" noise"!

What a load of BS!

Sounds like loose suspension component. Had the same problem in the front on my previous 430 and had to tighten all suspension bolts, noise went away after.

We just purchased the car last week so I'm thinking I'm just gonna take it and see how it does for a month or so and then bring it back that way the CPO warranty will pay for it. I think the dealer at this point would be held responsible for bill since the car was just certified a few days ago and that's why there saying it may be normal.

I know one of you recommend taking it to Flow Lexus out of Winston Salem. That dealer is 93 miles away. So I'm not sure how that would work. Will they let you drive loaners that many miles?

I have exactly the same car. No thud. I suspect, as someone else posted, its something in the trunk or spare tire compartment that's not properly bolted down. You should love this car, by the way.

I had my wife check the spare before she took it to the dealer. She claimed it wasn't loose. But you you know how women can be when comes to that kinda stuff.... So I'll check again once we pick car back up.

Not just the spare itself, but the tools in there as well. And perhaps an item that the prior owner left in there.

How many miles do you have on yours? Have you ever had any of the struts replaced?

Just approaching 60,000 miles. No struts replaced,. but some control arm bushings (whatever they are) were replaced a while back under warranty.
