Default LS 460 Navigation System

I have been very disappointed if my 2008 LS 460's Navigation System. I have a Garmin that I take on out of state trips where I use a rental car and it is a lot better. Is the $300 + upgrade worth it? Thank you for your response!

I took my gift card from the VSR that my dealer performed in Dec and applied it last weekend to a new Navi update. It was 199 for the thumbdrive with the key file on it (its only a 256meg drive!) and 129.00 to transfer the data from the Tech Stream unit. I was going from 6.1 on my 2007 to the latest 10.1 and the interface if much nicer, I got rid of the legal screen and it added a lot of data for my area in So Cal. Overall I am happy with the update and they threw in a full take of premium fuel, that they forgot during my VSR.

I dont take a lot of road trips, mostly just around town, so to have Lexus pay for the update was nice, but I am not sure I would have paid the 329.00 to get it upgraded. Feature wise, the Lexus unit is not as good as some Tom Toms or Garmins, but having it integrated into the vehicle is nice, to go from 6.1 to 10.1 was a value added jump, but if your at 8.1 or 9.1 it may not be.

Just my 2 cents

Put in your VIN, you should be able to put in addresses and see what they updated in your area.

Default Nav upgrade

Do I just put upgrade dic in car and it upgrades automaticly or do I have to go to the dealer to have it installed?
I found the dic from your website on lesuxnavigation.com. I have a 2007 LS460 so I have the generation 5 system. The part number is PT219-HDDG5-11 for the 11.1 upgrade. Has anyone done this dic upgrade themselves?

You need to have it done at the dealer. It has to be downloaded to your vehicle. They don't use the DVD's anymore.

Recently took my car to Lexus of Valencia for 35k service, I asked them how much to upgrade the nav from 7.1 to 11.1. He quoted me $169 INCLUDING labor. So I jumped at it. When I went back to pick up the car he said he accidentally quoted me the wrong price, should have been 329 with labor, but they honored the price they quoted me.

And, as an alternative solution, for about $100 today, you can get a Garmin 1350 - Such that WHEN you need clear, concise, easy-to-request/modify directions, this Garmin BLOWS AWAY the pre-2000 engineered Lexus NAV system.
All of the Lexus upgrades will never get this expensive NAV toy to act as it should, especially for the cost of this beast.

What's nice about the Garmin solution is this: 1) You CAN use the MAPS on the LS NAV system until you want to go somewhere and need directions. 2) The Garmin costs less than a THIRD of just a Lexus NAV "upgrade." And these days, you can find Garmin's with Lifetime Map Upgrades INCLUDED (No cost). 3) The Garmin fits easily into the Lexus center console. Easy to get to when you need it.

Oh ! And when you do go purchase a Garmin, like a 1350 model, and start it up ..... it WILL find the street that's been outside your home for the past 5 or 6 years, unlike many upscale, luxury autos (hint ?) - LOL !.

Remember ... All this idea is simply a suggestion, plain and simple. If you do not agree with it, you do not have to either like it or do it. But for some LS owners here, they might like how inexpensively they CAN have a QUALITY solution in their hands inside their Lexus.

Oh Yeah ..... One last thing .... With the Garmin solution, you ALSO don't have to purchase and have installed a Prestige Society mod for (an ADDITIONAL) $ 330 PLUS INSTALLATION in order to modify/add a destination after you've started driving !

Best Wishes to all ...... Hoping this helps a few here.

i honestly have never used the factory nav. i think it's hard to use and just plain sucks compared to any other aftermarket nav. the nav on my phone is easier and better to use imo... i think this is my biggest disappointment with my ls460.

Truly, I think the Lexus nav system is WAY easier to figure out than the system in my wife's 2011 X5. Her system is nice, but the user interface is anything BUT user friendly. Big learning curve on it.

The Lexus NAV is really the only thing I HATE about my otherwise king-of-the-road, flawless LS460.

Me too on my '08.

I'm seriously thinking about installing a Kenwood after market system.
I just installed one on my '09 Tacoma and just love it.

It uses the familiar Garmin GPS/NAV system and you can permanently ground an innocuous green wire for complete nanny lockout bypass when in motion, this includes NAV, DVD and everything. It is MUCH friendlier and intuitive when dialing in addresses and routes. Has bluetooth, and external flash drive for hundreds of .mp3 music and videos...I don't bother with $atellite anymore. Garmin has Kenwood updates on their website.

The Kenwood also features a backup camera hack wherein you can turn on the rear view camera any time you want, even going forward. You can even reverse the image so you can read some tailgating ****-head's license plate before you take him out with your trunk-mounted LAWS rocket. ;->

I understand Alpine and Pioneer also make good units but they use TomTom, etc., and I was already very familiar with the Garmin systems so I selected the Kenwood.

Crutchfield.com includes the dash head unit panel, wire harnesses, instructions, GPS antenna and all. Looks stock. A good system runs about $800, however goes on sale now and then. The head units CAN be found cheaper at other outlets, but Crutchfield included the accessories, extensive phone tech support and they all fit the first time.
