Default Oil Filter

I am going to have MOBIL 1 0W-20 oil installed at a local shop soon and am wondering about the oil filter. Is there something better than the OEM Toyota filter that I should be using if I want to go 10,000 miles on Mobil 1?

I think you would be fine with the factory filter. You can purchase them at any Toyota dealer. Also don't forget the crush washer for the drain plug...

Is the filter used on other Toyota models? Just wondering why a Toyota dealer would have that filter on hand if it's only used on the LS460 V-8?

I believe the tundra as well as the sequoia both carry an optional 4.6 motor which use that same filter.

Ok, I bot 10 quarts of 0W-20 Mobil 1 to take to the dealer. I'll let the Toyota dealer use a Toyota filter. Is 10 quarts enough? I believe it takes 9, but it's not clear if that's in addition to a filter change amount.

Just picked up my new LS from the dealer today and I asked about the oil. A service manager came over and said they put 5W20 in it. I asked if it was better to use 0W20 in the winter and 5W20 in the summer. No, he said, it's best to use 5W20. I asked about synthetic vs. regular and he said regular because it's what Toyota uses and recommends. Service every 6 months or 5,000 miles.

Just reporting what I was told.

Why would the dealer put ANY oil in a brand new car?

Dealers love to recommend 5w20 oil: it doesn't hurt the car and is cheaper to install than 0w20.
0w20 will give you slightly better gas mileage and may contribute to less wear on the car in winter.
You decide if the extra cost is of value to you. Originally Lexus 'required' 0w20 in the LS.
I suspect the outcry from the dealerships encouraged Lexus Corporate to recant.

Interestingly if you use Mobil 1 synthetic, the WALMART cost is $6.37 for either...so there's really no cost penalty for the 0W-20.

I have a 2007 LS with 56K miles and I have been changing my own oil since the 15K service. The Lexus dealer did the free 5K change and charged me a $159 for the 10K oil change. They did a sloppy job, also I noticed they over torqued the filter housing when they changed the oil at 10K.

The 2007 takes 9.1 qts and I use Mobil 1 0W-20 as recommended in my owner's manual. I change the oil every 5K and use a Toyota/Lexus filter.

I buy the filter at a Toyota dealer on sale for 3.99 ($10 at Lexus) and the oil on sale - I bought several cases of Mobil 1 0W-20 at Pep Boys at the day after thanksgiving sale for $4/qrt.
