Cool Extended Care Plan

Hi,

In your opinion : is it worth buying the ECP from Lexus?

I have a LS 460: it has a 4 year year 50,000 mile warrany (I am sure most of you know this already).

The sales man is suggesting to purchase a 96 month: 100,000 mile extended care plan.

Any advice is welcome.

Agreed, the extended warranty prices are VERY negotiable.

On my new '08 I got the $0 deductible, Platinum, YW7, 7 year/75,000 mile plan for $2040.

Might have done better, but they gave me a bunch of stuff so I decided not to push it, and we don't put that many miles on the car in a year anyway.

You can also call your insurance company and see if they offer extended warrnaties
We have (and until September) Geico and for an extra few bucks a month they offer an "extended" warranty

Of course with all extra warranty's you have to be careful as to what is covered, who agrees to pay what labor costs and how much time certain replacements take, not every company/book agrees with another

We had lots of headache with an aftermarket warranty for my dads SL500, the shop would say one thing and the warranty company would only offer another, many headaches

Sorry if this comes across as a dumb question, but does the extended warranty kick in after the standard warranty expires?

I'm sure the salesman is trying to get you to cave in and go with a 96 month/100k mile warranty....because he will make an extra $400 off you and the dealer will make even more. Dealers don't sell extended warranty plans because they are loosing money on them. This a cash cow business and the house always wins. You are betting against the most reliable car on the market and chances are you will loose. Ride out the factory warranty and if the car is falling apart at the end of the factory warranty period then go ahead and shop around for an extended warranty (which ANY dealer can sell you or any aftermarket provider can sell you).

Generally I agree with this advice. But an LS can EASILY rack up a $3000 or more repair bill in years 4-7. Even with the drivetrain covered for much of that electronics alone can eat you alive.

I guess it really depends on your own risk tolerance. If you feel uncomfortable without the extended protection, then the extra money is worth the peace of mind it gives you. If you are more prone to games of chance, then roll the dice and go without it.

I'm somewhat of a risk taker, but the main reason I won't buy extended coverage is the car is so darn reliable. Now if I had bought a Mercedes S550 ..........

Also, I agree that their price is high. I'm sure you could negotiate a better deal, or shop around.

The extended Warranty is co-current to the manufacturer's warranty.

I bought my ls last december and paid $2k for 2 additional years of warrant or to 70k miles (i think) whichever comes first. The great deals is that if I don't use any warranty service, I will get the $2k back. Additionally, I get free maintenance for the first 2 years for $1. I think this is a great deal.

where in CA did you negotiate the 2 years or 70 K ? Isn't the drive train covered after the factory has expired?

Glendale Lexus. I forget what the mileage is when the ext. warranty expires. But I know it is an additional 2 year warranty. Great deal considering the current interest rate. Plus you get your money back after 6 years if you didn't use the warranty.
