Default Nav system PLUS compass

Nav system PLUS compass.
We have a 2008 LS460 with the Nav system, however, my wife would really like to add a regular compass. In the owners manual, they mention a rear view compass display option for the LS 460. Is it possible to have both? Any ideas on how to get this done?
The parts guy at our dealer does not have a clue.
Thanks.

Are you aware that the nav system can display a compass?

Select the "Map configuration" button (lower left of the screen, just above the zoom in button) and you'll see a selection of different views, including single map, dual map, turn list, and COMPASS.

If you select COMPASS, you'll see a full compass.

One of the bonuses while in COMPASS display mode is on the lower right portion of the screen is displayed the current street address, which changes as you drive. Also displayed is the current longitude and latitude.

You can buy rearview mirrors with compass displays.

Google it and you'll find lots of vendors.

funny thing is if you look at the stock rear view mirror (at least on my 07) under certain lighting and angle, you see the location for the compass display. so i somewhat think the compass is "in there" already. now hooking up, i don't know, don't think i have seen anyone done that

but yeah, regardless there is a compass on the top left corner of the nav already?

Henry, you're right and I noticed it as well in '07, but that disappeared in '08. I guess somebody must have seen the redundancy and what it costs to put in a dud. The rearview mirror is all clear now.

Default Compass/Nav system....Headphones

Thanks to everyone who responded to my compass/nav system query. I learned some things and am still in the process of trying to achieve my wife's request.

Has anyone heard of installing a headphone jack into the sound system? My local stereo/tv, etc. shop says that it is not possible. While my need for headphones is not critical, it sure would make things at home better. I am willing to lose sound quality while the wife and I are together but still be able to hear my tunes. Thanks.

It's worth mentioning that it's illegal in lots of places to have headphones on while driving.

The procedure to turn it on is in the owner's manual as well, and I tried to when I detected the mirror compass display in 2007. However, there is no power going to the compass on cars that are equipped with the Navigation system, so it can only be activated on entry level LS460s.

I set my nav screen to North up instead of "car direction up" so I can tell, at a glance, which direction the car is going. I like to see the nav screen as you would look at a map. I know others are not comfortable unless they see their car icon going straight up on the screen. I am a reformed boater (42' gone!!!) and reading the nav screens on a boat are also easier to understand by setting the screen north up (IMHO).
