LS460 Wind Noise Fix (merged threads)
They're just adding some extra insulation to the LWB. They added the insulation to my SWB when they installed the laminated glass...

They're not adding thicker insulation to the door seals, they're adding it inside the doors to close up gaps is the way I understood it. They did tighten the belt moldings on the windows for a tighter seal. That's what I remember the tech telling me...

Well. Where do I begin? First I would like to thank everyone for making these boards a dynamic and valuable forum for Lexus owners. I would also like to thank Lexus for making one heck of a car (2007 460LS).
OK...sigh...ahem...
Over the past 24 hours, members of this forum have engaged in a dialog wherein they have taken an interest in my posting of "wind noise". In order to verify the noise and match it to a specific TSIB, I had my wife sit in the passenger seat to pin-point the noise. Here's how that investigation went:
Me: OK, you get in over there and tell me where its coming from.
Wife: Right. First let me put the window all the way up.
Me: The window is all the way up.
Wife: No, its slightly cracked...see? (pointing to window crack)
The rest is history. The window crack made the whistling noise. The car is remarkably quiet (verified ad nauseum this evening by 30 miles of silent, high-speed driving).
Nospinzone: You pegged it right away. I thought the windows were up because when I tried to close them tightly, I had the lock on and they didn't move...I thought they were closed.
sidgriggs: Your theory is in tact...my late model 2007 car is now damned quiet.
Mods: I wouldn't blame you for banning me at this point...I am clearly distracting an otherwise orderly posting environment.
Everyone: Please flame away...I eagerly await personal attacks through either public posting or private message.
In the mean time, I will turn my attention to writing my acceptance speech for Dumbest CL Poster of the Year Award.
Thank you.

Whecks, you know I almost didn't post my question about could a window be open a crack because I thought it would be insulting since it was so elemental. However, sometimes it is just so easy to overlook the simplest things because our mind tells us it has to be more complicated than that.
I'll tell you I give you all the credit in the world for coming back here and making that post. I dare say 95% of the posters here would have never come back with that, I doubt if I would have. Its like men asking for directions, it just ain't gonna happen.
You've got guts and a great sense of humor ........ not too bright though.

My LS is going in on Wednesday for window replacements. My odometer now stands at 17.5K, and the wind noise, which was non-existent at first has become progressively and exponentially worse. The only relief I get is to crack the window ever so slightly. Which proves beyond a doubt now that contrary to Lexus' assertion that noise is caused by wind turbulence impacting a very quiet interior is naive at best.
The problem is caused by a poorly designed window seal, the door frame it sits in, or the amount of travel as it settles in its closed position (or a combination of all these). At this point, I can even feel the air leaking in. The window thus locks tightly in the upper frame and over time, the seal is forced beyond its design limits, until some air is allowed to enter in the cabin. I can even hear the window loudly crack open on the passenger side when it hasn't been used for a while. By opening it ever so slightly, the integrity of the seal is restored. This could partially explain why this problem got by Lexus at the manufacturing stage.
One thing that concerns me is whether this problem will surface again even after a replacement. I'm going to get a hold of a dB meter before this work is done and record some measurements before and after.

So after reading twenty one pages of messages regarding wind noise issues, I am confuse if I should buy a 2007 Ls460L or should I wait till 2008 model year comes out. I test drove two Ls460L and they do have wind noise at highway speed. From reading this thread, I worry that this may be an issue that does not have a solution.

I agree I have yet to have driven ANY car with zero wind noise at higher speed (70mph+), including the S550, LS430 etc., when you reach a certain speed, it's inevitable that you will hear some when everything else is quiet, as long as it doesn't sound like the window is not closed properly.
Rominl and Robarapta, when I say wind noise I am of course referring to the unusual whistling or rushing wind noise that this thread has been talking about. Anyone that ever drive a car knows that there is always normal wind noise. I have a LS 400 so I know what it means when they say lexus is quiet. The 460L that I test drove has a distinct whistling noise very much like driving in the rain. I can imagine that it can be irritating if it is there all the time. Moreover, I am worried that it is a problem that cannot be fixed like some of you stated in this thread. It is a April/07 production model. I will be test driving a 06/07 model sometime this week.

Shawn - I had the laminated fix done to my SWB, and I still hear wind noise coming from the top of the windows/doors when I hit 5o or 60 MPH...it seems the LWB fix - thicker insulation on door seals - is kind of pointed smack dab at the problem. I'm wondering if it's worth asking my dealership to apply the LWB fix to my car...Any thoughts?
Thanks
