Cutting the speed signal wire wasn't enough according to an earlier NAVI hack attempt:

I understand getting the system hacked so an iPod will work and so that one can watch a movie while driving, but what I don't understand is why a driver needs it for a phone call or for entering a destination? I've used the voice recognition system to dial by name and by number, and I've entered complete destinations that way as well. To me that's preferable to using the touch screen even if that function wasn't grayed out.

(NB,this question isn't directed at you, I know you haven't stated you wanted to watch a movie, but others have stated this on previous threads.)

Voice recogintion would have worked for me, if only it worked It usually dials a number which is a little off. It recognizes 8 digits out of 9, so the accuracy is pretty high. Unfortunately it is not high enough to make a meaningfull phone call. Dialing random people with similar phone numbers is not what I like to do. Instead I find myself cursing and repeating the same number over and over again like a frigging parrot. I become a very distracted and dangerous driver when I do that. I plan on placing an electronic marque in the rear window, that would say "Danger. The driver is using voice navigation to dial a phone".

The voice recognition in my wife's Honda Odyssey is much better:
1. It actually recognizes what I am saying.
2. It is much faster. When I press the "speak" button, I can speak immediately. In Lexus it thinks for about 1 second and then bleeps.
3. I don't have to select a region to make a search in a particular area.
4. I can speak letter-by-letter if it has trouble recognizing the whole word
5. It always gives me a list of names, which match the sound pattern. Even if it's off, the correct word is usually somewhere in that list and it takes a single tap to select it.

Same goes for the list of "nearest" objects. When I say "Nearest gas station" I want to know if it is on my way or behind me. I don't mind driving a extra mile if there is a gas station on my way. I don't want to make a U-turn and waste time going back. Honda is displaying a list of gas station with distance and direction, so I can make an intelligent choice. Lexus can only guide you to one nearest station or nearest restaurant, which is NEVER what I really want. I don't understand, why it is OK to show 3 screens with "Speed Dial" numbers, but it is not OK to show 1 screen with a few nearest objects. How is it more dangerous than looking at the list of Speed Numbers?

Because the voice recognition only allows for 20 voice tags. Aside from this you can dial the numbers, but most people haven't memorized all the numbers of the people they would like to dial. You also have the choice of the nav speed dials and speed tones, but again, if you have many contacts (usually most contacts have a minimum of 2 numbers) then the car does not provide enough automation for voice recognition...if it did, then I agree, the phone issue would not be an issue as I have had good luck with the voice recognition. Everyone has their own preferences, but for me touching the nav screen is preferred because of the number of navigation prompts...just to dial someone. Even with it set for the initial prompt to be off, you still have to go through "dial by name or number", "say the name", "press the off hook switch"...too much. I've got to the point I just interrupt her with the next command by pressing the voice command button when she starts talking..that helps.

Well, yea, sure, that's because you have friends!

I see your point, that makes sense.

there you have it. perhaps this is the reason why Toyota/Lexus has implemented this lockout "feature" on their vehicles. However, I do have to agree with others on the other thread related to this. There should be options available.
