Interesting, yes, but really there's no such thing as a "no-cost option". It's in there somewhere, and if GM and others deleted it across the board, it would affect the price somehow, some way. We're being spoonfed so many redundant features on cars today, that we have fallen asleep at the switch while car prices have risen exponentially. So, if Lexus makes it an option, at least we have the choice one way or another. And thankfully, only the user pays in this instance.

Someone at Lexus corporate told me that Lexus had to upgrade the analog cellular phone hardware that formed the basis for this system to digital, and needed time to make the swap. As a result, they stopped selling it for that year.

Also, if no one wanted the service, it doesn't make sense that they would bring it back.

Interesting, perhaps the analog-digital thing was the culprit. Also, other threads on CL suggested that they had 2 operators working at the OnStar facility, and there was a lack of demand.

It's possible that the service is brought back in an attempt to see if they can reignite interest. Lexus is running Lexus Link ads like this:

Additionally, the new LS and the premiere of Lexus in Japan features G-Link, with real-time traffic, onboard security cameras--a Lexus Link type system.

My new August Road and Track arrived today with a major endorsement for Lexus Link type systems. Anyone who has the mag, read the new 5 series review on page 52. It turns out 2 reviewers leave the road and flip the car. They explicitly thank BMW assist for the quick emergency response to the accident scene.
These club forums boggle my mind because everybody is so interested in larger wheels, lowering cars and the latest worthless gadgets like the 460s parking assist program that basic solid safety enhancements like Lexus Link get dismissed as unnecessary. Folks, I think anything that can improve your chances of surviving an accident rates way above stuff that makes your car look "cooler", but I think I am talking to the wrong audience.
