Default NAVIGATION & Rear View Mirror w/ Compass

My 81 year old father is getting his '07 LS460L (blk/blk) anytime now. It's supposed to arrive between the 20th to the 26th. He has an '04 LS430 now and my mom has a '04 ES330 Sport Design (haha, what a joke). Anyways, we sold the ES and are replacing it with the new LS. My dad was always annoyed that his '04 LS didn't have a compass in the rearview mirror and that my moms '04 ES did, and also that my '06 GS430 does (even though they all are equipped with NAV. He asked our salesperson at Meade Lexus of Southfield Michigan if the '07 LS had the compass in the mirror and our sales person confirmed that the new LS has a compass in the rearview if not equipped with NAV (which have not began production yet). My dad told the sales person that he wanted his LS to be equipped with the rearview compass and asked if this could be done. The salesperson called the parts dept. and the head service tech to see if this could be done. Yes, it could. The harnesses match up and it would just be a matter of ordering the part, removing the existing mirror and installing the new mirror with compass. I was guessing that this was going to be a $900-$1000 part plus labor. The salesperson quotes us $850 installed. My dad agreed. What do you guys think? I think it's a lot but if it makes my dad happy good for him. At the very least it will be a unique vehicle as far as '07 LS's go being equipped with both NAV and the compass in the rearview. Not to mention that my dad also oredered the dealer installed OEM Chrome 18's. My dad is gonna be big pimpin' in his Black on Black LS460L sittin' on Chrome. Oh yeah... My dad is like 5'6 on a good day with a big belly and talks about leg room but moves the seat up all the way, lol.

One of the screens on the Nav system is a compass. But you lose the navigation screen in the compass mode. The split screen function does not include the compass. I think ordering the mirror with the compass is the best way if you want that function.

We had the same discussion about our LS 430 with NAVI, ultimately I can live with it perfectly fine (it helps too that I generally have an innate sense of compass direction). However, for $850 if it's important, and if you really want it, then I think it's ok. Anything to make the perfect vehicle more perfect.

I wish you were able to switch from temp to compass mode in the instrumental gauge, instead of just temp, since its already displayed on the top console screen by the clock.

Agreed, that's where I first looked for it when wondering if a separate compass display was available. I think that spot displays something when Dynamic Laser Cruise Control is on? (We don't have that feature).

Your dad has earned the right to have the compass in the mirror. If $850 is ok with him, then the issue is closed. Hope he enjoys it for many years.

My Ford Explorer has a compass in the instrument cluster information display, plus I have nav. Of course there's a million features from the LS I don't have!

JKashat - if that's what your Dad wants and he can afford it - I say go for it!

Thanks, to everyone here for their comments.

A little update for everyone...
My dads new LS arrived on Thursday, I got the call while I was at the GYM on the treadmill. My sales person said that it would be ready by Saturday or Tuesday (because of Christmas). I went to see it on Friday. WOW! I love the interior. It reminds me of my 06 GS430 but much nicer and more plush. The exterior is much sleeker looking than I thought too. I dig the third breaklight location and exhaust tip design within the bumber. I can't wait to see it with the Chrome OEM 18's with my dad (or mom) behind the wheel.

Just an FYI...
I will have the brand new OEM 18" ally wheels and a rear view mirror (without compass) for sale after Tuesday.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years too!!!
