I'm a newbie 2014 LS 460 with a trunk latch problem should I replace with oem, rebuild, or unbranded unit?
What is the problem that you’re experiencing? I just had mine replaced by the dealer. It was not opening with the fob, button on dash, or button on trunk hatch. Only way I could open was with the fob shank key.
Does not open/ close with the fob or in-car button. Also the latch continues to whirl and lock/ unlock.
My assumption is the dealers going to want the better part of $1,000 well I am thinking of doing it myself with a rebuild or an unbranded trunk latch mechanism. Essentially wondering if the unbranded trunk latch is of adequate quality. Of course I am upset that the original Lexus part is plastic and prone to breaking :-(
Several threads on this. Many go with a used OEM part. If you can find non Chinese, that may be OK. Any Chinese auto part with electronics has the potential to fail in a couple of years IMHO. Based upon what's reported here. People do post that they used a Chinese part with initial success, but the proof is years out.
I went with a new non-oem unit for about $140 Ebay. New oem's are in the $500 area. If I had it to do over, I go with the new OEM because I plan on keeping the car for some time.
My only concern is that the OEM trunk latch plastic Gizmo has not had such great success either. You would think that Lexus would have found a good solution by now :-(
Failure depends, in part, on how often it's used. Perhaps the previous owner had high usage. What's your typical usage. If low, then your concerns are moot. Also, the original lasted 9 years. How long will you keep this car?

Certain types of breaks of this part are permanently repairable. There's a youtube showing the "how to" available.
I'm the second owner it's a 2014 with 22,000 miles on it. Paying dealer prices of $1,000 for the repair that would require setting aside $100 a year for just trunk latch maintenance :-) you would have thought Lexus would have watched the YouTube and came up with a permanent repair :-) I am complaining tongue in cheek , so far at least I actually love the car:-) obviously an oem replacement part is best. Just wondering about the cost-effectiveness/durability of a "rebuilt" (I am assuming the rebuild is just the failed plastic part) trunk latch versus a whole new unbranded trunk latch, new motor etc. does the unbranded one come from the same contracted factory just without the official Lexus designation?
