Default Need help with VVT solenoid!

my 2008 LS 600h gave error code 0042. I changed oil and filter but the warning light still come.

So I decided to change VVT solenoids. I removed the old ones but the both of them fell apart in two pieces, no way you can't them out with one piece.

Now I'm waiting the new solenoids but it seems that there still part in engine hole where the solenoids should be.

Does anyone have tips for this?

Firstly, there's no 'code 0042'. Can you get a real DTC?
You will need to pull valve cover off to dislodge it and pray it didn't do any damage there. Afterwards amount of parts needs to be replaced to get the cover back on. Don't skip this step.
Still not convinced (not a real code mentioned) it have to do with those solenoids.

I'll bet he used an inexpensive, generic code reader. To diagnose a complex system like Lexus, a better code reader is needed. Good luck with the job.

I've had good luck with the OBDLink MX+ (uses Bluetooth) which runs right around $100, and if you want to be able to use Techstream the VXDiag VCX Nano is the least expensive cable that is capable of all performing all Techstream functions. It also retails for around $100.

If you want the highest quality cable that is guaranteed to work with Techstream then get the Opus IVS (used to be Drew Technologies) Mongoose Plus Toyota 3. These are currently running anywhere between $500 - $600.

Relax, I gave you the wrong code.

The real code was 0024.

And now I'm 100% sure that the outer part of the VVT solenoids are still in engine.

There's a few things to try for P0024 before swapping the solenoids though. The solenoids have their own filters in the head, and those can clog. There's an active test in Techstream you can run to actuate the solenoid and confirm that it affects the idle. Timing being off can also generate this one.

Too late for any of that though. If you can't get the parts out, you'll probably have to remove the valve cover to get access from the inside. Before doing that, have you tried a blind puller? The thing you attach to a slide hammer, with arms that expand after inserted?
