Default Diagnostic Trouble Code - P2246 - 99 RX300

I just had my oil changed at Oil Changers. As I was arriving home I noticed a pronounced engine rattle - almost like knocking, but much louder. Then the Check Engine light came on. I checked all fluids, caps, oil pan, etc., and everything was in place and at the right level. Took it back to Oil Changers, they ran a diagnostic from under the drivers consoled and came back with Code P2246. Can anyone give me some information or advice on this problem and its repair?

Thanks in advance.

JC

I bet one of the things they checked during the oil change was the air filter. To check the air filter they had to open the black top of the air filter box. On the back of this box between it and the firewall is a black rubber hose which connects the top to a metal tube and should have a clamp on the end of the hose. It is not that unusual for this hose to come off during an air filter check and it will cause a check engine light. Just squeeze the clamp and slide it back on the metal tube.

That hose comes off almost every time someone opens the air filter compartment. It will cause the check engine light ot come on, but I have never had it cause any noise. This sounds like something different. Be sure and let us know what you find out. Do a search on this site for check engine light and there might be some info on the code.

Unhappy Loud noises are never good!

Welcome to CL, jcondie! We hope one of our members can help. Those OBD II codes can be a godsend when running down a problem, but they can also be confusing.

Based on some generic information, I believe that the reading you were given is a Lexus-specific code, probably related to an auxiliary emissions-control fault. If it were the light alone, I wouldn't be overly concerned. The noise is what concerns me. Check with your dealer to be sure - if the engine is making a loud noise, that may or may not be related to the code - either way it 's not a good sign. I wouldn't recommend driving the vehicle until you consult with your dealer or other knowledgeable shop. They have the resources to translate the code and tell you exactly what it means. These resources are available online, but require the purchase of a book or CD.

Hope it all works out!

There is no listing of a P2246 for the 99 RX300 in the Lexus repair manual. Are you sure this is the number they got?
