I’ve read the endless threads till I was dizzy and I think I have it, just need to make sure.
2005 with nav and ML audio. Looking to totally remove ML system and install aftermarket double din head unit, amp, and speakers without disturbing the functions of the stock screen.
Looks like I need the Beat Sonic MVA-24 between the stock harnesses and the new HU, RCA cables to the new amp, Metra 70-8117 harness to bypass the ML amp, then the speakers.
Sound good? The only things I’m still unclear on is I’ve read the front drivers door speaker is on another harness and goes through the nav first, but i also saw this thread that has them all together. And I’ve seen some DVD bypass where the nav screen mirrors the new HU, I don’t care much to watch movies but it would be cool to have the nav from the new HU mirrored on the stock screen. Or was this just a video output from DVD players?
When I check on crutchfield.com they say no head unit is compatible with your vehicle. Nice. That Beat Sonic kit looks like it will for you but...
The "Mode" button on the steering wheel controls will be deactivated after installation.
Volume button on the steering wheel control adjusts gain on the factory amplifier.
Don't know if you can get the volume adjust to work with an aftermarket amp. The ML amp likely has an input specifically for the nav I'd try and find a wiring diagram to see what type of signal that is. Reading that thread it's not clear to me exactly what the deal is with the factory NAV, did it still work? I think so....

Crutchfield is great but they don’t have every solution for every car, it’s probably where I’ll order the bulk of my system from. Not concerned about steering wheel controls so that’s a non-issue for me. I’m pretty sure a member here has found a way to use the volume control with an aftermarket stereo but it requires some next level electrical know-how. Yes, with the BS kit all the factory functions on the stock screen are retained.
Volume is controlled by the ml amp so that wouldn't work with an aftermarket amp. Driver's door speaker has two inputs, from the amp and nav ecu. You can just use the speaker wires coming out of the amp to run to the aftermarket amp.
Will the navigation unit produce sound if the amp is not there? There are data lines going to the amp but then the LH speaker appears to be connected in parallel with the amp and the nav. That is odd.

I have the BeatSonic kit in my non-nav non-ML LS430 and it works perfectly. There are plenty of reviews on the Metra kits where they didn't do what they were supposed to do. Do your research before you buy their kit. If you buy BeatSonic, get it directly from them...
I did my research, and I didn’t say anything about a Metra kit. My research led me to this thread where a Metra harness was used to bypass the ML amp and use the factory speaker wiring without splicing any wires.
