Tire Advice
Hello!
So my LS430 has the stock Dunlop SP Sport 5000m tires on them. 3 of them have 5/32 inch tread left, and the other one (rear pass side)...well...sprung a leak on the sidewall and cannot be repaired. I currently have the full size spare Dunlop on the rear passenger side, but it's new and has 10/32 tread.
I'm thinking of doing three actions, and wanted your advice on what you would do:
1) Buy a used Michelin Premier tire with 5/32 inch tread left, and mount it in the front, so that both rear tires are matched.
2) Continue to use the full size spare Dunlop SP Sport 5000, but mount it in the front instead of the rear
3) Buy a new set of tires and put the spare back. I'm thinking of the Bridgestone Turanza Quiettrack. Any opinions on this tire? Looking for the smoothest and quietest tire I can get.
Long and short of it is, I know the OEM Dunlops are crap, but I don't want to throw money away. Would mixing 3 Dunlops with a Michelin be a bad idea? What about three used tires and a brand new one?
Thanks!

I wouldn't get Michelin Premiers, they start at 8.5/32 so a 5/32 is actually 46% worn. The problem is they are known to go only 35-40k so best to avoid them--they wear faster than common sense would imply, with pieces falling off. We are replacing my wife's with the LTX version but Michelin upped the tread to 10/32" due to all the warranty replacements. Apparently they didn't do it on the car version.
If this were < 2010 when we eye-balled everything, honestly? I would have tossed 3 good tires at 5/32", because after my first set of RS-As on my first new car which went 87k, I told myself there really was no need to do that (it's like the more I didn't replace them and the more the bars were showing, the better I felt). You could always break it down like money. If a normal tire now starts at 10/32, and you're at 5, you used 50% of the tire. Yes it sounds wasteful to toss 50% away. At the same time, Most tires do not claim to get better when worn as Michelin Premiers do (didn't K&N try that with filters, the dirtier they got, the better the filtration, and got away with that claim for many years), so 5, 4, 3, is worse than 9,8,7, etc. I'd like to be in the 3-4/32" range where I think OK to toss. Or sell. They aren't really going to get scrapped. They'll wind up reinstalled on someone else's car. Drive through W Phila or Hunts Point NY and you'll see the shops who install them. Maybe you can just get a tire from one of those shops and keep the other 3. The possibilities are endless. You can even get $90 new tires and they'll last you 5+ years--are you keeping the car that long?

So I ended up buying two used Michelin Premiers with 7/32 tread from Bestusedtires.com.
Going to have them installed and balanced Friday. Any thought on whether to put them on the front axle or the rear?

Well I was gonna day just buy all new ones at this point but I see you already bought a pair, I would put the better ones on the front if you are in a dry/ice free climate and don't drive hard. If you drive hard put them on the rear
My local Costco is out of stock of the Bridgestones I wanted. The two Michelin's at the site I used were only $59 each.
I live in Chicago, so I'll put the Premiers on the rear and drive it for another year or so on the mixed tires.

I would have gone with the new Bridgestones, but my local Costco is out of stock, and their sale ends tomorrow.
I'll have these tires checked by my installer prior to putting them on. I figured it's better to get two used tires than have a 5/32 difference between my rear tires.
Hopefully, these will last me until next summer, where I'll pick up a new set.

Think of these next time if yur on a budget. Take out a card I have always been happy with the high end Goodyear all season. These have good reviews 500 bucks plus or so with a card.
