Evaporator Core Leak
Considering car and this is the only real negative, well that and their current asking price on a 2006. ;-)
SERVICE: EST TO RPL EVAP CORE $2524
DESCRIPTION: EST TO RPL EVAP CORE $2524 ~|~A/C IS NOT COOLING WELL ~|~ ~|~90613 RECHARGED A/C SYSTEM AND ADDED FLUORESCENT DYE. FOUND LEAK FROM EVAPORATOR CORE. ESTIMATE TO REPLACE EVAPORATOR CORE AND EVACUATE AND RECHARGE A/C SYSTEM $2524.00
And what I was able to do was to pull the humidifier off and see the A coil in the furnace, and see ice forming on the evap.
My colleague had a tree fall and crush his compressor. I said man you lucked out, now insurance covers both! We also had a tree fall (man that costs a lot to remove, it's been a pricey July!).
On a 2006 car I would say $2500 is not worth it. On a home it's about $5,000 to replace the system with a 2019 system, that will last hopefully 20 years. I have had friends with 2 Suburbans where the rear evap leaked and they did not fix it. There's always the chance it's fixed and it happens yet again (friend with a NAV L had this scenario). There is never any reason any system needs to be recharged, be it a refrigerator, central AC, car, etc.
My advice is to disqualify the vehicle from one's search.
In other words, like a cooling system, there is never any need to add refrigerant or coolant (OK a LS430 is the first time I've found it's normal that all the coolant eventually evaporates).
I get it, it's about cost. But if this isn't your car, why make it your problem? Maybe I misread...isn't it like saying, I really like the house but it needs a new roof. Most people run from these issues, this is like being a storm chaser!
Not my primary dealership, but I know the Svc Mgr where the car is, and ended up talking to the new GM the day I went by to look at the car,...so will be interesting to see how it plays out. It was GMs first day and he was pretty accommodating, so we'll see.
The big question will be if it comes back as no leaks, but tech isn't able to visually confirm it was replaced...then big unknown.
My preferred tech knows one of the service techs at the dealership, so working to get a somewhat independent PDI by him.
